My son woke up crying because he couldn't breathe through his nose, due to sinus congestion.
I had him sit up and also did the hot shower steam thing. He seems better but thought I'd ask if anyone has any other ideas?

Horseradish, wasabi, hot mustard. Those are all things my mom would always say clear your sinuses. Not sure if a child would tolerate that though. Breathing over a bowl of hot water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil and a towel over your head helps a little. If I'm really feeling bad though, taking a decongestant is the only real way to feel better. Staying hydrated will also help thin the mucous.

You could also try getting him some breathe right nasal strips.
