We are thinking of naming our baby girl (who will be here within the week!) Lyla (or Lila, or Lilah). We want it pronounced with the hard "I" like LIE-la. The question is - how would you spell it?

Probably Lyla, but my uncle's wife's middle name is spelled Lila.

That is probably my favorite name ever (that we won't be able to use because its too close to my SIL's name). I'd go with Lila.

I would spell it Leila or Laila.
Leila is a good friend's name.
Laila is DH grandma's name.
They both pronounce it LIE-lah.

I like Lilah because it looks pretty and because it still looks exactly as it sounds.

@Crumbs: I think of that as a different name...I would pronounce that lay-la.
I like Lila!

whew you guys are so split! But I can appreciate that at least we won't go wrong whichever one we choose. I'm just so torn with it being pretty versus how it will be pronounced. I'm nervous with Lila it could be pronounced like Lilla... Our last name is already mispronounced in a similar way so I'd feel bad if she got it with both names : / ... but Lila and Lilah are "prettier" in my opinion...
And thank you for all the nice comments on it! We haven't shared it with anyone yet, so I'm glad to hear you guys like it!

@oliviaoblivia: lol I totally mis-typed that - I have to go fix it!

I voted for Lyla but also like Lilah. My first thought when I see Lila is to pronounce it like Lee-luh.

My hairdresser's daughter's name is Lilah.
I think that is the best spelling. It looks the prettiest and I totally think people would pronounce the name correctly.

@Mrs. Lovejoy: I do agree that the "i" looks prettier than the "y", but I'd probably mispronounce Lila. So I voted for Lyla.

Is it weird that I'm thinking Liala?
Of the 3 choices, I like Lilah.

I'd spell it Lila because that's how Lila Fowler spelled it in the Sweet Valley High books

@swedishfish: That is the first thing I thought of too!
I would absolutely pronounce any of them the same way you wat it (LIE-la). But I would need it spelled for me if I was writing it down just from hearing it.
I know a Lyla and Leila, both pronounced the same.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: thanks, my useless knowledge comes in handy sometimes
@Foodnerd81: Sweet Valley High was awesome!

That's one of my fav names ever!!! My puppy is named Lila - I was too impatient to wait to name a future LO that. @swedishfish: that's where I got the name! Ha! I've loved that name forever.

I prefer Lilah. I know a Lila who pronounces it as LEE-la, so I think that influences my vote.

My great grandmother was Lila (short for Eulilia), so I chose that one.

Lyla, like Kyla!
I think Lila is easily confused with Lee-la (DH's cousin's daughter is Lila and I STILL cannot remember if it's LIE-la or LEE-la. Seriously. She's four.) Lyla is clearly LIE-la. And very pretty too! I love it in cursive!

I'm biased because that's the name of one our of closest friends' daughter, and they spell it Lyla, so that's what I chose! No one , at least not to my knowledge, has ever mis-pronounced it.

lilah. to me, its the same pronunciation as delilah, just without the "de."

When I used to read Sweet Valley Twins books (ha! I'm old and you may not know WTH that is!), they had a friend named Lila Fowler. I was never sure if it was LYla or LEEla and I wanted it to be LYla so that's what I went with:). So just due to pronunciation issues I vote LYLA....Beautiful!

Interestingly, DD has two friends with these names and this is how their parents pronounce and spell their names:
LIE-la = LYLA
LEE-la = LILA

I voted "Lyla" but I thought before reading the comments that you would get the same pronunciation either way. Now I am maybe leaning toward "Lilah". It is really pretty!
