I hope so too!! I panic when my dog is too loud at the vets office. Really hoping I can play it cool during a tantrum!

I remember my mom picking me up and putting me in another room when I would throw a fit (4+, since I can remember it). It totally worked because I did NOT want to be alone. I learned how to effectively communicate that way.

But you know what...I've experienced the opposite! I was at a Trader Joe's near my house and my son was throwing the BIGGEST tantrum everrrrrr. So I calmly picked him up and held him so that he would calm down. But he kept screaming and crying. So we walked over to a corner and I just saw there with him until he calmed down and I told him that once he calmed down, we would talk. Until then, we're just going to sit there until he calmed down. The whole time I was talking to him in a very calm manner. Well, I had a few people come up to me and tell me that I should be firmer with him and that it's unacceptable to act like that in public. They said I should be raising my voice so that he knows I'm upset. I told them that he's in his tantrum mood right now and any amount of yelling wouldn't help. And that I will have a firm talk with him once he's calmed down.

I don't even know why I was explaining this random strangers. But I felt judged that I was actually trying to be calm and patient during his tantrum! Can't win!!!

I really, really try to be that way, but I struggle with having a short temper. I'm getting better about it, just in time for DD's tantrums to get worse.

@Danizaur: Oh I hear you on the vets office - my dog FLIPS OUT as soon as anyone comes near him. If you weren't in the room, you would think he was being beaten to death. Oye!

@BabyBoecksMom: Thanks! Oh I almost lost it at the strangers though. I was about to chuck my jar of Cookie Butter at them. But I frequent that TJ's way too much.

@keiki_mama: That's hilarious. It's like buying illegal merchandise from a street vendor. "Hey, you got the good stuff? You know...the CB. How much do you want for it?"

@banana: I can't believe people said that to you! I wouldn't have been so nice. I'd be all "He's my child and I'll parent him how I see fit thank you now move along." Lol

We handle tantrums that way. No sense in yelling, it doesn't accomplish anything and they don't listen. If redirection doesn't work for my 17 month old, I sit with her and tell her I'll talk to her and be happy to give her a hug when she's ready to calm down.

@erinpye: My LO is also 17 months and lately i just handle tantrums by letting her cry for a bit. She doesn't talk (but i know she understands) so i'll just talk and acknowledge why she's upset. I'll then give her a hug, and pat her back until she calms down. This past week her naps have been super short because of all the newcomers to her daycare room so i know it's due to being tired. No point in yelling at her!

@banana: Unbelievable. I'm sure these people were wonderful parents in their day. I think the other problem is that people forget what sort of discipline they used on their children at different ages. How i treat my 5 year old may be different from how i treat a 2 year old.
