We got a hand me down swing at 3 months, but don't use it much. He's taken a couple of naps in it. No bouncer. We have the RnP which he slept and napped in sometimes early on, but we didn't do that much so there was no transition trouble. I sometimes put him in it with toys while I showered (the Tiny Love Sunny Stroll arch is great for that kinda stuff). We use a PnP as his crib, which is convenient for travel because he's already used to it. When I need to set him down, I mostly use his baby gym or a blanket with toys. For us, the PnP is the only neex out of those, though we could just as easily have used a crib if we had one.

We had one and did not use it! It's still brand new. We didn't have any of the other "baby containers" mentioned either, except for a PnP, and honestly I did not miss them! LO needed to be held vertical due to severe reflux so baby wearing was the way to go!!

We didn't have a swing with DD and the few times she tried one out, she wasn't a fan. My mom bought us a swing for DS, and he didn't like it either; he would stay in 15 minutes tops, if he was swaddled and completely asleep before I put him in. Instead we used the bouncy seat with vibrations (both of them napped there a lot as newborns), the crib, and our bed (we also didn't have a pnp).
If you change your mind on the swing, I saw this ingenius product last summer. Graco makes a swing frame to use with their carseats. The carseat just clicks onto the frame, so the frame itself folds up very flat and is extremely portable. I thought that was such a great idea for people who are limited on space or need a portable/travel swing.

I bought a swing used. It was in good condition and it was a plug in one so that made it worth the 45 dollars I paid for it. Both of my kids loved the swing til about 5 months. It's currently disassembled in my basement waiting for the next baby to use it.

@daniellemybelle: We don't have one. We use the RnP and a bouncer. DS tried a swing for the first time this weekend and hated it.

LO is only 2.5 weeks old so take this with a grain of salt... We don't have a swing, just the RnP. 95% of the time LO sleeps in his crib no problem. The other 5% are generally situations where he's having a bit of reflux and then I put him in the RnP (or hold him, we snuggle ALOT). He falls straight to sleep in the RnP and hasn't had any spit up incidents in it yet. Being 4.5 weeks early, the nurses said he'd probably have a little bit of reflux and actually encouraged us using the RnP if we couldn't hold him upright for 30 minutes after he ate. So it's come in handy for that, with the angle that it is.

Ok so I know you said you want to hear from people without a swing, and my lo was a big swing lover, but I just wanted to chime in and say that on the creating good sleep habits thing, the "baby containers" don't always mean bad sleep habits, so don't be afraid (at least in the beginning) if you have to resort to one of them. That said, I'd say each baby is different and while the swing can be a lifesaver for some, it takes up a lot of space and it can be completely useless for some babies so you'll probably be fine without it!

Thanks everyone for your great feedback! I have been reading each and every comment and learning so much!
I think, bottom line, it depends on the baby, but we should be fine without. If we feel we need one, we can always borrow one or get one second-hand, but not planning on getting it before the baby is born.
Thanks again (even those of you who did have a swing and cheated, haha)!

No swing for us. But we did have a newborn bouncer and it was a lifesaver! It allowed us to actually eat like normal ppl, which is so hard during the fist few weeks.

no swing, just a rnp and a baby bjorn bouncer chair. those have been essential for us!
