I get nostalgic time and time again thinking of my latchkey days growing up in the 80's & 90's but those days are days long gone. But that era was far from perfect either. I dealt with racism, bullies, and spoiled rotten kids back then too. Change is inevitable with modern technology so we have to do the best we can to raise responsible citizens. We have to work with the resources we have as parents.

I often say my baby is "the center of my universe" but that is just an expression. I am not going to spoil her rotten or coddle her. I will teach her that life isn't far, to be kind to others, power of hard work...etc. The author has some valid points but bullying is a serious issue. Kids can be so mean and cruel!

I get that she's trying to say some kids cry "bully" unnecessarily (I teach elementary and some kids can't handle when someone just doesn't prefer their company). However, her example is seriously lacking perspective. Kids these days use social media to torment each other and the victims who commit suicide (how she could even begin to victim-blame is beyond me!) have been dealing with far worse than names.

It strikes me that she took some fairly common sense ideas and added controversial statements to make it seem "passionate". It's nothing new, sister, and I'm not even sure helicopter parenting is really running rampant as she suggests. I think kids' entitlement comes more from lazy/thoughtless parenting behaviors than hovering/center of my world parenting.

@JoyfulKiwi: I am with you on that.
Personally I find the mom blogger's post a bit insensitive, unintelligent and mildly offensive.

@JoyfulKiwi: yes! I'm a "helicopter" parent because I'm an anxious person. That doesn't mean my LO gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants. We have lots of tantrums around here
