Depending on when my LO decides to arrive, I will be celebrating my 30th birthday with a 2-4wk old baby. Obviously I won't be able to celebrate with a big party, dancing and champagne as I'd previously imagined. But, I would still like to mark the occasion with some sort of a get together, especially since my big 3-0 falls on a Saturday.
I've thought about having a few friends for dinner, but I don't want the pressure of cooking for a group. I also thought about going out to a restaurant but I want to bf so I would have to bring LO...Any ideas for a fun, low key celebration??

I would have an elegant dinner at home (more relaxed, don't have to worry about being out late with a newborn, etc.) but make it potluck!

I was in the same situation. What we ended up doing was driving a couple hours to my parents and spending the weekend there. My grandparents came down to meet baby for the first time and some friends and family came over for a cookout. So basically my mom threw me a birthday party. We helped with the cooking and clean up but there wasn't as much stress as if we had to get our house ready and be in charge of it all. And I got to show off baby to people who hadn't met her yet.

I threw a party for dh when lo was a newborn. We did it at home so we could put her to bed with no worries, and I just brought most of the food in to keep it less stressful.

We celebrated by husband's birthday when my baby was 5 weeks old. I found a nice restaurant that would let me do takeout and brought food home. I was gone for 45 minutes getting the food, and the baby cried the entire time. So, not such a great evening for my husband. But he was really surprised about the meal and had a good time after I got home.
For my birthday, I bought my own cake at Whole Foods. Not as good as homemade, but at least I didn't have to spend the day alone with the baby while my husband tried to figure out how to make one and clean up. -
aw, I was in the exact same position! I turned 30 when my LO was only a week old. My poor husband was left with trying to figure out how to make it special while keeping it flexible.
Honestly, I don't think you want to have anything concrete planned. For all you know you could be in labor, you could be in the hospital!, your LO could be a day old.
It's best to perhaps leave it flexible and a casual get together at home. You might not even feel like "entertaining"!We ended up celebrating at home with our two closest friends, my ILs, my mom and the best 30th birthday present a girl can ask for. My husband made me whatever I wanted and my mom gave me a free pass for the day! hehe. He put up silly birthday banners and got me a crown and a birthday pin!

I love the idea of a potluck . . . maybe with a few extras from one of your favorite delis and/or bakeries?
Oh, and if possible, I would totally have a glass of champagne!

@Rubies: @MsLipGloss: Potluck is a good idea so I don't spend too much time in the kitchen. I'm the type of person who goes all out for dinner parties so potluck would be a good way to prevent me from wanting to make a 3-course meal from scratch! Also, Mslipgloss, you better bet I'll be having some champagne!
@Maysprout: This is also a good idea. We live an ocean away from my parents, so it would have to be at the ILs and I share a birthday with my FIL. So it would be kind of impossible to do this without making it a joint bday party for the two of us. I have to think about it, not sure I want to share on my 30th
@looch: This is a good way to keep things low-key without pressure on me to host at home. Also I could find a place close to home so we can move the party there if ever LO is unreasonably fussy and needs to sleep in his/her bed or something...
@artbee: + @Downward Dog: Good call on getting something from a caterer, I had thought of this is great Japanese place close to my house. The lady who owns it is adorable and makes everything herself and I'm pretty sure she would deliver if I asked since I live really close.
@regberadaisy: You're right that I should try and keep things flexible. I'm not too good at that to be honest, I'm a big planner...But I'm not sure what motherhood will be like yet. Maybe I'll take it in stride and feel up for a party, maybe I'll be exhausted and barely want to see anyone at first. I guess we'll see!

@Chastenet: I def hear you on the planner. I'm a crazy planner as well. Ha! I started planning her 1st birthday party even before she arrived! But at some point you just gotta let it go or go crazy!
