If you went to a restaurant that was owned by a friend of your husbands… and it wasn’t great!
What would you rate the restaurant and what would be in the review?

I voted I wouldn't review it but I changed my mind. Friendship trumps a so-so meal. I'd review it positively and give it 5 stars. If it like made me sick or something I might talk to friend to give them a heads up and then abstain from reviewing. If it were just an acquaintance I'd probably abstain from reviewing.

@JerricaBenton: Hm.. you made me think of something interesting... what if your husband's friend pushed you to write it but you aren't really that good of a friend of theirs but he's pushing you because you have "elite" status on the review site.
You don't have to answer! I am just musing!

I review a lot. So out of courtesy, if it was a poor experience, I just wouldn't review. I'd rather not review than compromise my personal integrity.

@stiletto_mom: What if you were push to do a review? Again you also don't have to answer... just musing.

@Raindrop: I'd think it was pretty rude if he pushed, but I've had friends ask me to review their business and I generally would do it and write a positive, if not quite glowing review. Surely there'd be something positive I could say. Like if the meal is so so I'd say it was a beautiful restaurant, great service, interesting menu etc. and then mention the best thing I ate. My husband's a business owner so I guess my view might be colored by that but I think I'd try to give a nice review to a friend/ very friendly acquaintance.

I wouldn't review... but if the friend pushed, I'd let them know there were issues at your first visit and you'd like to give it another chance before you left a review.

What kiddosc said.
I'd probably then tell the friend my verbal review and tell them that's why I wouldn't review it.especially if pushed. I'm the honest type friend though, not necessarily the one that just "listens" lol

I wouldn't lie to a friend if their business was on the line. I would want my friends to be honest with me so I could make changes and help my business thrive since that's my livelihood. I would be more positive in my written review, but it's always very obvious when I read reviews who are the people who are leaving the phony friend reviews and it annoys me.

Depending on the friend, I would practice my constructive criticism skills
"We had a much-needed night out Fred, thanks so much!! We loved X and Y, however to be honest on Z the chicken was undercooked and the bread had hairs on it. We were forgotten about for about 20 min after apps came out. But the server Myrtle was fantastic and the wine reccs were on point ."
Of you're going to criticize start and end with positives. And your critiques need to be concrete and specific: no wishy washy stuff. Really think about what wasn't great, make sure it's not just personal preference stuff, and be prepared to elaborate. Or be prepared to just shut up and move the conversation along quickly!!!'
Eta: I'm a strong believer in face to face feedback. I think Yelp is ok, but protects reviewers behind a veil of anonymity and allows a diluted commercial form of cyber bullying. If I owned a business, I would appreciate someone telling me bad stuff to my face or vie email before it goes on the internet forever.
