What do you use as birth control? Our ultimate plan is for DH to get vasectomy. But I want to make sure I'm 100% convinced we are done. Right now I'm at 90% convinced.

I'm planning on the pill after this baby & done nursing and dh will get snipped in a couple years when we are 100% sure we are 2 & through. (Even though we are 99.99% now)

I had a copper IUD (Paragard, hormone-free, lasts 10 years) inserted at my 6 week appt.

I am on the mini pill. Long term I would love for DH to get the snip but he's not so convinced

My plan now is for Mirena or another IUD, depending what my midwife recommends. I figure I will have that in as long as it lasts (5 years or whatever) then think a bit longer term solutions.

I have a mirena. I love everything about it except I don't like the weight I've gained.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@Dandelion: you gained weight from it? I gained on the pill and didn't like that at all (duh no one does). Boo. Are you BFing? Did it affect that at all?
watermelon / 14206 posts
@Foodnerd81: yep. M is still nursing at 15 months twice a day. It never affected my milk supply. I think the weight gain may be a combo of bfing and the mirena. Once M finally weans I'll know for sure.

I'm done for 5 years and I'm getting mirena @Dandelion: how bad is it? I've heard that about mirena. I figure babies make me fat, too, LOL.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
@BandDmommy: No, it's totally hormone free. I'm actually confused as to why so many people choose hormonal IUDs which I guess can affect supply (and a lot of other things) when there is non-hormonal. The only side effect was spotting after insertion for 4 days.

Hubs will get snipped pretty soon after number two is born and we make sure all is well and he's healthy, etc. we are 1000% done at two so in theory hubs could get it done while I'm still pregnant but I don't like to count my chickens before they're hatched and you just never know what could go wrong.

We're still cooking #2 but after it's born D will be getting snipped and I plan to get another Mirena.

I just worked really hard to lose baby weight. I can't imagine getting a hormonal IUD with a possible side effect of weight gain. Ugh!
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
@PrincessBaby: How long have you had it? Everyone I know who had one of those (all of 3 people...) said they had really long, heavy periods with it and I'm curious if that's the norm.

Condoms. I tried going back on the pill but I was having so much break-through bleeding that it wasn't worth it. I've heard too many horror stories about IUDs to try those out. DH will get a vasectomy sometime in the next year.

@PrincessBaby: personally, I have endometriosis and periods are bad for my fertility! Non hormonal isn't an option. Plus I hate my period. I want it to go away!
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
@lovehoneybee: I just got it at 6 weeks PP. I'm 9.5 weeks PP now. My dr said that I could have heavier periods but I won't know for a long time bc I'm BFing. She didn't make a big deal out of it though. And I had heavier periods after having my first daughter anyway so I was like "Whatevs."

Mirena. I don't see us ever getting permanent procedure done!

@blackbird: I guess it's water retention? That's what I've read all over the internet, anyways. I gained over 20 pounds that I can't shake off.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Dandelion: yeah hopefully a lot of that is breastfeeding. I have a few friends who can't lose it until they stop!

I'll get the Mirena again when we are done. I had one before babies and it was amazing. No periods, no pills to remember to take.
I had it for four years and didn't have any weight gain.
My sister had the copper IUD and swapped it out for the Mirena after having her period for three weeks a month.

I got the paraguard at 8 weeks pp. I had spotting on and off for a couple weeks. So far at almost 4 months pp my periods have not been affected, same as my first pp period after DS they are pretty light compared to after I had DD. I don't BF.
I can't do hormonal BC or else I would have opted for the mirena with the hopes of no period.

My husband and I are 99% sure we are done after two, so I think when my son is born, DH will get the snip. It seems like the best way to make sure we don't have any unplanned pregnancies. My two sons were both surprises!

We are very much done after this baby, so I'm getting my tubes tied during my csection.

We aren't done but I love my Mirena. I still spot some months but it is still better then 7 days of a period I had while on the pill. I don't remember gaining weight when I got it. But I was also 9weeks PP (or around there) so I was obsessing over the scale.
But like Blackbird said pregnancy makes you way fatter so if I gained 5lbs from it, still better!

I have the copper iud and I've had it for about a year and a half. My periods are MUCH heavier and slightly longer than before, but I didn't want any hormones. I'm pretty satisfied with it other than the heavy days.

My husband will be getting a vasectomy during his paternity leave.

I plan on getting a Mirena put in around my 6 week postpartum visit. After 3-4 years and if we're still sure that we are done, DH will be getting a vasectomy.

Still undecided about #3, but I'm very happy with Mirena so we'll probably stick with that. I'm not too interested in permanent measures for either of us unless we went for a third and I had a c-section.
Knock on wood, no problems so far, no weight gain, no effect on nursing, and no period (kinda freaky, but awesome) (ok, a few hours of spotting, but that's it). My OB won't do copper, since he's seen too much heavy bleeding as a side effect.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
So I did not realize that Mirena meant no periods...That helps me understand the "other" side now:)
If I have problems on Paragard, hubs is just getting snipped bc I am not getting pregnant again. But it makes sense for those who are not done! Potential for weight gain scares the crap out of me, but sounds like it was weight neutral for most, so that makes sense:)

I'm going to get an IUD at my 6 week appointment, then at some point DH will get snipped. He wants to do it basically now, but I'm insisting we at least give it some time before we're officially one and done. But we're both very sure.

Too late to edit but I meant I wasn't obsessing over the scale. No way I was I obsessing at 9 weeks.
