I imagine it varies by hospital/practice, but our OB did not note it anywhere in our files!

I would think that it varies - my friend's sister found out just before she had her son that he was boy. She was lightheaded at the end of her pregnancy, passed out and was brought to the hospital. They accidentally told her when she came to.
I have another friend who's OB slipped and told her, too. Oops!

No, they don't record anything about it. The only person who knew the sex was the ultrasound tech and she does not write it down.

I don't think it was noted. I actually thought my midwife gave it away at one of my last appts when she said, if it's a boy, have you thought about circumcision. I was like, ok she knows it's a boy and is just playing along with the "if" thing... Nope I had a girl.

No ours did not write it down anywhere . The Drs and nurses were just as excited as we were to find out at birth.

My midwives (hospital-based) didn't even know. The radiology department doesn't communicate the sex to them, only the vital stats and measurements and such. The midwives only find out the sex before the birth if the parents have found out and tell them at one of the appointments! It was so funny when DD was born, DH and I kind of forgot about checking in the excitement of the moment. After a minute or two, the attending MW was like "should we check to see if it's a boy or girl? I don't know about you but I'm dying to know!" And we were like, "oh! Yes! Us too!"

Yes! At our hospital they mark it down as part of the anatomy scan results. We weren't team green so it didn't matter, but I saw "sex: male" as one of the items in the results on my online portal. So I definitely wouldn't go hunting too hard.

Our office does record it. Every visit the first question the doc asked was do you know the sex?

@BadgerMom: interesting!!!! is it bad that i'm SOOOO tempted to look now!?!?!?!?
pear / 1616 posts
we were team green for our first and nope they didn't write it down. for our second i knew but my husband didn't, so they wrote it in the records but also wrote a note that the husband doesn't know he didn't find out til delivery!

With my first pregnancy my doctor didn't even know. The radiologist doesn't pass on the information. With this pregnancy it will be in my file because we are doing the Harmony test. We haven't decided yet if we want to know but if we don't they will put the test results at the back of the file and put a big note on top that we don't want to know.

My midwife didn't even know the gender. I was terrified that she would accidentally tell me but she said the ultrasound tech just wrote that the anatomy all looked good but didn't say what the sex was.

I think they did or the ultrasound tech slipped when I was overdue...she started talking about our boy!

I did genetic testing and the sex was listed on the report. My OB just hid it in the back of my file.

They didn't. Our midwife told us it wasn't relevant information that needed to be in the file (after they could see that all the parts were developing normally, and such).

Our office doesn't record it either. Makes me feel more relieved not to have to worry about the midwives slipping!

My office doesn't record it, if you aren't finding out so that there aren't slip ups. That being said, I have non-invasive prenatal screening for genetic disorders that showed the sex at 10 weeks. They put a sticker over that part of the result that says "Patient does not want to know sex". So someone could find out, but they'd need to actively look, it's not just right there.

No, they didn't check it. When we told them we didn't want to know, the sonographer avoided that area.
grapefruit / 4903 posts
Mine didn't write it down if you weren't finding out. With my second, I moved at 33 weeks and had to get copies of all my records. Sex wasn't recorded anywhere.

@MrsBrewer: my midwife didn't write it down so no one knew until he was born
blogger / apricot / 310 posts
Ours did! That's actually how I found out we were having a boy. At the hospital, while in labor, they had already written 'boy' on wristlets for the hospital for our baby. I saw it in the middle of a contraction, lol.

@Mrs. Milk: No. Way!!! How did you feel?? Were you disappointed that you found out that way?
blogger / apricot / 310 posts
@MrsBrewer: good question. I was shocked! I had done the blood test for chromosomal abnormalities at 14 weeks (my health insurance covered it, which was awesome), so I suspected that it was in my file somewhere. None of my midwives let it slip, though, before then. When I saw the bracelets with my name and 'male' written I was taken aback, and just sad for my husband, who was the impetus to us being team green. I made him look though so we could both know. It ended up being a really special moment, and kind of awesome.

We were team green to the end and our little boy's hospital bracelet said "Baby Unknown LastName", instead of Baby Boy or Baby Girl, ha!
pomegranate / 3577 posts
@Mrs. Milk: Oh no! I just read your response. I'm so glad our hospital has the "unknown" policy.
grapefruit / 4770 posts
@MrsBrewer: My OB/Modwife office does not. They ask me at every apt what am I having again. Each time I've been to L&D, they ask me if it's a boy or girl, and they have my records right there on the computer. So, I'm going with a no lol.

I had a nurse do my ultrasound and she said that my doctor didn't need to know, so I doubt it was written anywhere.
grapefruit / 4819 posts
Nope. They don't write it down anywhere so after the u/s technician checked to make sure everything was developing normally, not another person knew what we were having until our LOs were born!

At the ultrasound clinic I went to they don't even look at the genitals if you don't want ti know the sex of the baby.
nectarine / 2173 posts
It's typically on the tea sound report but if your doc does their own ultrasound they might not write it down.
apricot / 358 posts
Yes! I'm not sure if this is a standard Kaiser practice, but our Nurse Midwife definitely knew the sex early on. I think their well-integrated electronic file sharing system gives them easy access to records from different departments.
At one point when I was about 36 weeks along, our midwife let a male pronoun slip. But she quickly added "or she", so we only suspected and didn't know for sure until our son was born.
