I like where we live now - right outside of Boston. We have all four seasons, good transportation, good schools and universities, a lot of diversity, within an hours drive of mountains and beaches... pretty much everything I'm looking for.
For a vacation home within the US, I'd probably go for the coast along the Carolinas - mild in winter and hot in summer. I wouldn't want to live there because I do like having snow/winter.

I’d live somewhere at the beach. Probably Gulf coast of FL. My vacation home would be a condo in NYC.

@raspberries: I grew up on the north shore of Boston. I love the area. My parents are still there right on the beach.
I think I would really like the PNW. Like in a mid to large sized city in Oregon or Washington

The area just north of San Fran. Or even just south like Palo Alto. Vacation home.... Hawaii?

We’d love to live near boston again. I love the four seasons up there and i love the city and culture, and how close you are to drive to other fun places too.
Vacation home - the area near traverse city in Michigan. I grew up outside Detroit and went to glen arbor many times. It is so beautiful in summer and a hidden gem. But no way do i want to live there all winter!!

Maybe Hawaii or somewhere on the coast of California if we are fantasizing about being able to live in the type of house we want and being able to afford sending our kids to good schools and no job to go to

@raspberries: also live outside Boston and agree that it’s a great area to live considering all those factors. And I appreciate having the seasons.
I’d live in VT on lake Champlain. Vermont on the lake in the summer is my jam. And really every other season has something to offer. But a house someplace warm to escape during the winter and the long warm up to summer would be nice. Just considering places I’ve actually been and liked, maybe San Diego?

For us a reasonable dream would be Central Oregon- 300 days of sun- really neat community. This is where we will likely retire if we can’t get there sooner.
A stretch dream would be somewhere on the water but in a big city. I love 4 seasons but also tropical weather. So it’s hard to choose. Maybe Santa Cruz or Florida. Maybe Charlotte or New Orleans.
For a vacation house- Palm Springs. Unless we lived somewhere tropical then Boulder or on a lake in Idaho.
We hope to buy a beach house on the Washington Coast more realistically.

@justjules: that’s where we are. My complaints are the rain and the traffic currently.

@youboots: I’m in Houston which also has horrible traffic. I LOVE gray, rainy days so that’s one of the reasons I feel like I would like it. But I’ve never lived there so maybe I would grow out of loving it.

@justjules: I have so much more appreciation for cloudy and rainy days in dallas than I ever did living up north! The sun in Texas is brutal!

Honestly, I'd live where we do- Northern Vermont. I love it here.
I'm not sure where I'd want a vacation home....I'm lame and don't really like to travel that much. There is a place about an hour from here with a lake and beautiful ski trails in the winter....a cabin there on the lake, with access to the trails...that would be pretty great.
In other news, I'm the most boring person I know.

For somewhere to live, I'd love coastal North Carolina. A friend of mine moved to Edenton, NC and it looks beautiful. But really, any of those little towns that Nicholas Sparks writes about. I had a patient from his home town (New Bern, NC) who said it was basically a perfect place to live.
For a vacation home, since I'm living on the beach, I'd want to be in a city, probably NYC if we're really shooting for the stars. I could never live in New York because it's just too busy for me, but I would love to spend a week here and there.

@bhbee: I love that area too and worked in Glen Arbor during my summers in college. My parents live around there, so beautiful.
I'd go farther north to the UP for a vacation cabin. Pipe dream, since DH claims to hate trees and snow.
To live full-time, probably west Michigan along the water. Or Chicago if I were really wealthy.

@Bibliolove: i love the UP too! I’ve only been a couple times to a friend’s cabin but so beautiful.

@youboots: Is money not a consideration either? haha
I actually really like where I live now. I would just have a much bigger place. I wouldn't mind a vacation home somewhere at a beach (again, if money is no object and I can have my pick of wonderful locations), and I'd probably want it to be nearby so we can visit regularly in the summers. Maybe a 2nd vacation home in the mountains, close to good skiing. haha.
I think what I really want is my current life and to just to win the lottery. Is that asking too much?

I like where we live (suburb of NYC), but I’d love a larger home. I love how liberal and diverse NY is and that I’m super close to city where the best culinary restaurants, arts, and entertainment exist. Our town is beautiful and sleepy, yet not too far from an urban center. I also like that it’s an easy flight to most of Europe, etc.
For a vacation home I’d love to be on the beach in Kauai or perhaps an apartment in San Francisco. While I’m dreaming, a private jet would be nice too.

Where would you want a vacation home?
Definitely Hawaii
Why would you not want to live there full time?
All the limitations of living in a small island.
No idea where I'd want to live because I'm too biased by having friends and family close by.

I need to travel more to decide! I am in the Boston area as well but probably would not choose it here if I didn't have to take into consideration all the important things. But honestly, I don't know where I would choose! Somewhere on the ocean but not West coast or south of DC probably.
As for vacation homes either Nantucket or Hawaii. Or both, preferably.

I'd like to live full time in a suburb of Chicago because I like the 'burbs, but I'd like to be nearer a bigger city (but not as big as NYC or Boston). And I like having winters. For a vacation home... maybe somewhere in the mountains? I haven't really ever been on any vacations in the US that aren't beach or city, but cities aren't relaxing and I don't really like the beach.

I'd love to try living up in the NorthEast. So much history! And everything seems well connected by transit unlike the West.
I'd want a vacation home on the Gulf of Mexico. I love warm ocean waters

We love living about 45 minutes outside of Boston, love having all of the seasons, love being close to mountains, and love living about 10 minutes from the ocean. I need the ocean in my life forever.
All of that being said, at some point I would like to try living somewhere new just to try it out. We *almost moved to San Francisco about 7 years ago, that would have been so fun and different, but VERY far from our families. But maybe in the future!

Hawaii! I’ve been there twice and I love it. It’s the only place I’ve ever been where I said at the end that I want to move there and live there forever. I’m Canadian though and wouldn’t be able to afford the health insurance. Maybe I’ll be a snowbird when I retire. Except to Hawaii and not Florida.
