Say that you magically had a home that was large enough for your parents or in-laws to live with you, and it didn't increase your monthly expenses any.

No, I love my parents and I love my in-laws... but living with in-laws and parents is not ideal for a healthy marriage. Having parents around all the time will just lead to clashes of opinions because everyone has a different idea of the "right" way to do things

Agree with @mrsbells. While I love the break from childcare I get every once in a while, it just would *not* be worth the toll on our marriage. This is mostly referring to my in-laws, though I think eventually it would be weird to be living with my own parents, too, at the age of 30!

NO WAY! There was a time period where DH and I considered moving into his parents house for a short time to save up some money to a downpayment on a house, but we decided our sanity wasn't worth the savings. I get along so much better with my family now that I don't live with them.

I would - but not for an extended period of time.
DH and I are actually preparing to move in with his parents in about a month. We're re-locating to Atlanta for my job and we want to buy a house. They offered to let us live with them while we house hunt and buy something. We took them up on the offer and will probably live there a couple few months.

My parents? Nope! I love them but we get along oh so much better when they are a couple hours away! hehe. I could handle my parents being in the same city like my in-laws are, that is okay.

No way. My parents and inlaws are 15-30 minutes away, and that's how I like them. Close enough that they can come if I need them and far enough away that they can't just pop in.

We lived with my in-laws for 3 months right after we were married. It was fine because I LOVE my in-laws to death....but we were newlyweds so we needed our own space! I don't have a LO yet, so I don't know how I'd feel about that.

WELL... we actually do live with my parents. we moved from a much cheaper town, and couldn't find a nice rental in a good part of town in our budget. we're living with my parents for a little bit while saving up some money.
it certainly isn't a party, but i'm really thankful they're letting us stay here for free for a bit!

No way. I love both my parents and in-laws and we all get along without issues, but just no. I need my own space. Something where there was an in-law apartment might work, but not living in the same house.

I think my husband and I would both say we could live with our own parents but not the others. We both love each others very much but on a comfort level, I wouldn't want to live with my inlaws and don't think he would want to live with my parents. If we had to, I'm shrewd could make it work but it's not our ideal choice. I think it makes it too easy to turn to your parents for something instead of your spouse which will eventually start causing problems. With kids, it would be even more complicated,
I think we'll stick with living close enough for help but far enough for independence as long as we can help it,

We also lived with our inlaws when we first got married. Even though it was just my MIL, it really compromised our relationship. I guess it really depends on you and your spouse's relationship with your inlaws/parents. Personally, I think each family needs their own space.

I have a friend who's brother and his family share a duplex with his parents. They each have their own space, but easy access to each other. They have rules about coming over uninvited and apparently it works for them and the brother and his family are able to live in a much more expensive part of town than they'd be able to afford on their own.
I could sort of imagine this scenario (though my ILs are dead), but that's as far as I'd go.

@MegWag: that would probably be the scenario for us if we live with my in laws (which we're very open to and may be a reality). they're getting older and i'd love to spend as much time with them, and have them spend as much time with charlie and olive as possible.

I'm seconding the absolutely not. I love visiting my parents, but could never live with them or near them again. I definitely couldn't live with my inlaws. My MIL would drive me nuts too. She doesn't have any boundaries, so being nearby would make it impossible to keep them in place.

I could do it in a duplex or house/apt situation with my parents or his parents. Right now both our parents live in small-ish homes and I think both DH and I would go crazy.
My BIL and SIL are moving into a house right next to my in laws. BIL works on the family farm since he lost his teaching job. I think its much better than staying with them. We are there many weekends and with a LO in tow, it feels like we pack our lives up every weekend and don't have much space there.

We lived with our in laws when we were living in Brooklyn. But we were in separate floors with separate entrances but there's also an internal access through the entire house. Even then, sometimes it seemed too close for comfort but it was fine. We've sinced moved out of ny and had kids. I'm not sure I can do it with young kids but maybe when they get older. Our place is still there and we visit every so often. But it always feels just a bit overwhelming after while with the extra people around.

i'd love my parents to live with me so i could help them out. but i'm not dying to live with the in-laws. as much as i consider them family, i just don't think i'd enjoy living with them. i do think my parents would start to annoy me though.

but my DREAM is to have four or five houses on a cul-de-sac with all our family and closest friends as our neighbors. Haha.
So I guess the bottom line is that I'd love to live with my family and close friends, but I need to have my own house. Figuring out house rules, cleaning, cooking, kitchen, etc etc is just too stressful and creates too many conflicts. I'm so anal when it comes to putting things where I think they belong.
But yes-- neighbors make for free childcare and korean food all the time. I'm in!

HELL no. I get along with them all just fine. But I like my privacy. Also, our relationships with our parents would take a nosedive - MIL overshares, my parents are hyper-critical (and my dad is a t-totaler), his dad - that one would NEVER happen (he's re-married to a woman who makes my skin crawl.)
