In an effort to not overwhelm myself, I want to read just 1-2 books about baby/infant care. I am comfortable caring for babies but this a whole new ballgame to care for my own. If you could recommend just one book, what would it be?

@simplyfelicity: This one, but I'd buy the DVD version instead!

Ditto on Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. I was reading the book when LO was born but watching the video was more helpful.

@simplyfelicity: I echo @mrbee: (I read the first few chapters, although the DVD makes it quick!). Another great one is: http://www.amazon.com/Mom-Now-What-Peter-Reader/dp/0756628512 (Great pictures and straightforward information for postpartum baby care).

Baby 411 by Denise Fields. I usually start with that since it covers so many topics and then look online for another opinion from Mayo or WebMD or blogs, etc.

If you've already got the basics of infant care and safety down, I highly recommend Brain Rules for Baby by John Medina. It's a well-written and enjoyable book that covers how to raise a smart / happy / moral child.

I liked Baby 411 too. It was an encyclopedia of baby stuff and easy to look things up. I liked happiest baby on the block but it never worked for my babies. I borrowed the dvd from someone and that was enough.

Baby 411 - I'm on my second kid and still find myself referencing that book. I especially love how it breaks down illnesses or accidents and asks questions to help you determine if you should call 911, go to the ER, call the doc after hours, call the Drs office on the morning.
I like the Happiest Baby DVD - not book.

This one--quick read, insightful and funny and tearjerking, all three! Not a how to book, just insights into motherhood. http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Weak-Mommybloggers-Including-Finslippy/dp/1556527721
