I didn't change my name because I already had a name. It's my name, I like it. Simple as that.

I had never planned to change my last name and wouldn't have married a man who was adamant that I do it. DH would have preferred me to change it, and while I noted his opinion, it would have made me more unhappy to change it. I did give him the option of us finding some sort of middle ground and both changing to that, but he wasn't into it so that was the end of the conversation. He doesn't want to change, I don't want to change, so we stay as we are. As far as why...well, a lot of reasons. Partly feminist reasons - I don't like the origins of the name-changing tradition and don't like how it is only the woman who has to go through all the bureaucratic hassles and emotional adjustment. Partly liking my own name and feeling like his would not fit or sound good with my first name. Partly because I don't feel any real need to share a name to be a family, so changing my name just doesn't make logical sense to me. And a tiny bit professional reasons, as DH's name is pretty impossible and mine is easier. I could probably come up with reasons all day long but it boiled down to simply, I didn't want to and fortunately my DH respects my wishes (even if they differ from his) so it wasn't really an issue.

I'm about to be married, and I definitely won't be getting rid of my name- my birth name is my own, and I want it to stay with me. I might hyphenate, but I don't feel a lot of pressure to decide now. I think planning a wedding and having a baby on the way has moved that item down to the bottom of my priority list!

It is interesting though, the Mr. is Vietnamese, and in that tradition, it is apparently less common for women to change their names after marriage. He grew up with his Mom having a different name than the kids, and he didn't find it remarkable in the least, so he really has no strong feelings one way or the other about my name.

I haven't changed mine. I love my name.

My immigration petition was pending when we got married and I was advised not to change my name until that had settled. And since then, I've been too lazy!

@spaniellove: I have no brothers, and my sisters have all changed their last name. I like that I am keeping the name living.

Mostly laziness. I'd intended to change it, but never got around to it. I'm also kinda attached to my maiden name because it's really unique and I have publications in my name. DH doesn't care and so far it hasn't been a big deal having a different name than my LO.

I haven't changed mine yet out of laziness. I am planning on changing it and in the mean time go by her last name. My mom said "isn't that a little old fashioned?" yes mom, taking my WIFE's last name is old fashioned.

@sunny: Ditto! Anything to make the immigration process as easy as possible...

I haven't changed mine yet because we were in the midst of my immigration process to Australia and it was too complicated to change it just then. Since then, it's been too much of a pain in the neck to change my name in three different countries so I've just left it. We're now moving to the UK so I'm starting the immigration process again, which means the name change will be put off once again....

I'd like to share a name with DH and our children so I am sure one of these days I'll get around to it!

Because I do not want to be associated with my inlaws. I am not their family. Nor will I ever be. I can still be my husbands wife without taking his name.

@rachiecakes: That's awesome! Did you guys get any flak from DH's family? I hope not.

Initially I didn't change my last name because DH and I couldn't figure out what we wanted to do. I didn't like the idea of taking his last name and, even though he would have considered it, I didn't want him to take mine either. So ... four years after we got married we made up a new last name and both changed our names. Our reasoning was that we are a new family, so why not have a new last name. It's not for everyone (or anyone else we've met), but it works for us.

@Katrocap: sadly DH comes from a horribly abusive family and never knew anyone other than his one sibling and parents (his parents/sibling fled home country before he was born). He always intended to change his name.

@Andrea: Same. My name is my name and I feel like it's part of my identity. I have an Italian last name and my husband's is Irish.

I also feel like I've established myself in this world with my name - so why would I want to change it? It's part of who I am as a person.

Definitely laziness, and also as a teacher at the same school for 5 years pre-marriage and now 2 years post-, there just didn't seem to be a good time to say to my kiddos "Okay, I'm no longer Ms G, I'm now Mrs M."
As well, I only have a sister and female cousins, so the name would die with us! Luckily both my sister and I have kept our names after marrying. Our last name is VERY unusual (as far as we know we are the only ones in Canada/US/Australia/New Zealand) so I'd feel bad if it died out with our generation!
