would you choose a van or a full-size SUV?
ETA: I am still a SUV girl, haven't been convinced of the need for a van right now! We are a soon to be family of four!

Van. More space and it seems easier for kids and parents. I have zero issues about driving a mini-van.

SUV. We have two kids and want a third. I REALLY do not want to ever have a minivan. I'm just not a fan at all. I understand they are more convenient, but I feel like I've given up a lot as a mom. I do not want to feel ugh every day about the vehicle I drive. Who knew cars could make me feel this way? I say this and watch me get a minivan in two years.

Mini van, as much as I dislike them, they're really much more functional than a large SUV with a third row.
I've done a fair amount of family trips with my parents, it's 6 of us if we go anywhere, plus our stuff....wouldn't be possible in an SUV.

I gotta tell you, I am not a minivan girl....and I want one. BAD.
We bought a large (with 3rd row seat) SUV when DS1 came and while it's large enough now, with DS2 coming, I'm positive we'd be much more comfortable in a minivan. Just the room for the carseats and getting the boys in an out would be such much better.
If I could have a do-over, I would have just bought a van instead of our SUV.

Minivan.
Everything I've read says vans are better with 3+ kids, that SUV third rows are fairly useless.

Minivan! We road trip often and I'm just thinking about when the kids are older and trucking their friends around or music/sport classes etc.
I think minivans are super awesome and could care less that it's not cool.
3rd row seating doesn't make sense to me. You have no trunk space then you end up buying a roof rack cargo holder thingie.

I have two kids, and we fit comfortably (okay kind of snug) into a small sedan. FIL has a mini van that we borrow sometimes. I'm happy to use it for a day but cannot see myself driving it everyday.

SUV, but I'd try not to get a super large one if possible. I need to be able to park it!

I love having a minivan so that gets my vote! The automatic sliding doors, the kids can climb into the car seats on their own, and the newer models have so many cool features. Built in vacuum, built in cooler, etc. and we've done a couple roadtrips with other passengers and the minivan just makes it so easy. It's so nice being able to fit my double stroller, luggage, or Costco cargo and still feel like we have a lot of trunk space too.

I actually was 100% against a minivan; DH wants one and I wanted an SUV; but BIL just bought one and it is really nice, black, leather, sunroof, dvd players, sto&go. So I've been convinced. I drive an escape now but once baby 2 comes we'll be getting a minivan.

SUV! My mom was anti-mini van so I think that rubbed off on me!

Depends on the age....I'd get a minivan if they were all younger. But I think our family of 4 will be fine in a medium sized SUV (a honda CR-V).

Well, I voted SUV but then read the thread and @Mrs. High Heels: 's review of here makes me change my mind. My double stroller takes up all available cargo space in my SUV with the third row down so the thought of having space for the double and other items is so tempting!
We'll look for another vehicle as soon as we decide on a third child and I really think a mini van will have to be in the running.

SUV.
I refuse to ever, ever, ever drive a minivan. Nope. No way.

We're leaning towards an SUV when we move and may need another car. DH is against vans. Our friends with two kids said that they love their minivan, but are aware that it's not necessary in general.

I can't wait to get a mini van! We all fit in a sedan for now (although it's tight with all our stuff because the stroller takes up so much trunk space), but when the grandparents visit we can't all fit which makes getting around tough.

Right now. SUV, but I know how practical having a mini-van is.
ETA: DH said he would get a minivan! So I get to keep my CRV! Woohoo! Works for me.

I would love to rock a mini van. Never thought I would say that but they seem so practical with kids!
pomegranate / 3658 posts
Definitely neither. I think smaller cars are workable for families. If I had to pick though, a crossover/smaller SUV.

Never thought I would drive a minivan, but now that I have one I LOVE it and prefer driving it over my husband's car even when it's just me. It's so spacious and the automatic doors rock my world.

Van! I would love to have one. Our mechanic loaned one to us while our SUV was in the shop and it was SO nice. Climb right back there, so much room, it was actually fun!

Minivan. Not a sexy choice, but I drool thinking about how practical they are. Sliding doors! So much room! Sadly we're trying to hold off buying a new car for a few more years.

As soon as we became a family of four, I took my 8 week old baby out to buy a minivan.

Minivan. I've heard that if you get a 3 row SUV it can be difficult to fit kids back there when they're older. We have 2 teens (DH's prior marriage) and an almost 2 year old and are planning on having another, so the van is the only way we could fit everyone. We also do a lot of road trips and the kids have already commented (just got it a week ago :)) on how much more roomy the van is vs. the CR-V we had before. Also as kids start manning the doors on their own they like to fling them open, and I'm grateful for the sliding doors on the van so that isn't possible ;). We have so much space now it's crazy, and it drives really smoothly.

I was so set on never getting a minivan but after seeing the size of the third row in the SUVs, I think once I'm expecting #3, a minivan is in the cards for us!

We are a fam of 4 and fit in our SUV just fine. I just can't do a van-- no judgement for anyone who has one! They're convenient and nice, I just can't do it. If I had more kids? A van would be a necessity. But, I'm done with my 2

I need a minivan with all the kids I chaperone on the weekends (1 DD but lots of nieces and nephews). I have an SUV right now and watching my almost 6'0 feet, 200 lb cousin and his friend climb out of the 3rd row seats yesterday made me feel so bad for them.

we are a family of 5 and have a medium (I think?) sized SUV. However, we only have 1 kid in a car seat; before we had L we had 2 kids in car seats and it worked great, too.
I am still very much an SUV kinda girl.
pineapple / 12234 posts
The SUV didn't work for our family of 5 (2 car seats and a booster + a double stroller in the trunk) so we had to buy a minivan. It was kind of a hard pill to swallow lol but now that we've had it for a few months, it's amazing.
If I only had two kids, no doubt, I would not be driving a minivan.

Minivan! Our first LO is due in a few weeks, but once my car goes we already plan on replacing my car with a minivan

@HLK208: how long did it take after N was born to pull the trigger? we're pretty sure we want 3, but i also think DH's car (my 10 year old xb) is going to die in the next year. i keep going back and forth whether we just wait til we actually need the van (ie, i'm pregnant with or have #3) or we preemptively buy the van whenever his car bites the dust.
