I guess my entire post fit into the title field.
Do you clean your house before the housekeeper arrives? If so, please explain because I just don't get it!!!

I have been thinking about hiring a cleaning service just to get my house spotless one time but then I think about the pre-cleaning I would have to do. I would feel so embarrassed if people knew just how filthy my house really was.

We have a housekeeper once a week. We don't clean per se but we do put things away, or tidy up as the hubs calls it!!! Example: the clothes that pile on the chair in our bedroom - they go in the laundry bin or hung up in the closet. All my magazines / recipes / misc papers get put in their respective cupboard homes.
Our housekeepers do not do our laundry so we leave clean sheets on stripped beds. The two 'rooms' we don't tidy up at all are the kitchen and washrooms.

I tidy up so that she can get to the dirt more easily. No excuse that something was in the way!

Yes! My hubby doesn't get it either but I explained that our housekeeper's duties are just to clean the place (vacuum, wipe down counters, clean the bathroom, dust, etc...) but for her to do that, I have to tidy up our clutter beforehand. I hate having her touch our things anyway and then i can't find stuff when I come home.
Actually I sort of hired one so that I'd maintain a cleaner house in between her visits... If we didn't have one, I bet I wouldn't be on my toes about organization/clutter as much. I also hate deep cleaning, so that's mainly what we use her for.

We don't have a housecleaner now, but my parents had one growing up. It isn't that wacky to pick up for the maid. If she has to spend all of her time moving clutter out of the way, she won't have time to do all the down and dirty cleaning. I've researched getting a house cleaning service, and most of the websites suggest picking up a bit, so that the cleaning person has time to actually clean your place.

Ditto to what nyccalimama said - I do the same thing! I pick up and declutter before they visit every other week. My husband doesn't get it either! But, I won't go to the trouble of wiping down counters or toilets or anything - that's their job : )

Yeah, I tidy up. I don't CLEAN, but I do pick up clutter so that they can get to the cleaning without too much trouble. Like, I would pick up any shoes that are lying around, mail, etc that's lying on tables..

Ah... I want a housekeeper SO BAD!!!!!!! But I feel the hubs would never be satisfied with the results and well, I need to tidy up more. I'm a huge mess!

We have a housekeeper come once a week to clean. I try to straighten up the house the night before she comes. I don't really do any real cleaning just organizing and putting away. A lot of clutter accumulates in a week and so I just clean that up. Also, things like putting the clean laundry away.

I actually have a question about housekeepers - do you need to clean the house before you hire one? Not like vacuum, dust, etc, but put things away?? Hubs and I have been in our house for two years, but we still haven't unpacked some of the boxes and they are just in our office looking messy. I'd love to get a housekeeper, but I figure I need to actually go through my stuff beforehand. Is that true?

@Adira - if there is any clutter in the way then the housekeeper can't clean very effectively. But if things are just in boxes then I don't think you have to unpack them. Just know that they may not move the boxes to clean unless you ask them to.

@Andrea - haha, thanks! I think I'd probably feel too embarrassed to hire a housekeeper until we actually got our crap organized and put away! Then I could do it! Though I don't mind maintenance cleaning (too much). It's the FIRST pass through that I hate doing (which is why we still have stuff in boxes). So if I do that part, I probably won't need a housekeeper, haha.

I do try to pick up clutter and personal things, but I don't always have time for it.

agree with the posts above. we just hired someone. i hired her mainly to clean the house and to cook us some food. we have to put away important documents and such. typically, most people here are more of a "cleaning" service, not "maid" service. so they don't usually put away stuff for you, just clean, dust, vacuum, etc.
also, i'm hoping it helps me maintain the cleanliness while she's away. i'm generally just a messy person. (also, i don't want her to see how cluttered we live).

@tequiero: your cleaning lady also cooks for you? That's awesome.
We finally hired someone to come clean since my doctor told me that I shouldn't be doing any heavy cleaning myself anymore. I must say its pretty nice! I tidy up and declutter before they come. I also give my toilet a quick scrub too cuz I feel embarrassed if there's any...um...residue.

You shouldn't really care but just know that the cleaners will talk about you behind your back! I just recommended my cleaner to clean for my friend and she was telling me all about my friend's business which isn't so nice but I guess my cleaner feels close to me since she's been cleaning for us for 2.5 years now. So that just made me wonder what my cleaner says about me behind my back!

@milkteaandpolkadots - haha @ residue! that's one of their main jobs so stop doing that!
yeah we hired a korean lady specifically so we can get some good food too. we need to eat healthier.

@tequiero: ah...she's Asian. My friend's nanny is Chinese. She watches their baby and cooks for them too!

We've been discussing hiring a cleaning service but I want to clean the house before we do. Haha.

We don't have a housekeeper now, but my mom has had a cleaning woman come twice a month for years, so when we were growing up we would always have to pick up before she came. I never understood this when I was younger (what do you mean I have to clean??? That's her job!), but now I totally get it. I would want to make sure that things were picked up so that she could actually clean - because that's what my mom (and someday I) hired them to do, deep clean the house, not pick up after us.

@ALongFarView, I remember that as a kid too! But it makes sense to pick up/organize. My mom did actually clean sometimes too, like do dishes or wipe down the counters, I think because she didn't want the cleaning lady to think she was a bad homemaker

In general, we're not too messy but I wish we can hire someone to help with the deep cleaning. Unfortunately, the husband is really private and is against having a stranger in the house rummaging through our stuff. I hope he gets over it some day.....soon.
