We just recently had a will drawn up and we aren't sure where to keep it. I was looking into fireproof safes, but how do you know they're actually fireproof without setting it on fire and testing it out? And some of them are only good for half an hour, but if we were to die in a fire, I feel like it would probably be blazing for longer than half an hour.
Should we do a safety deposit box? Where does everyone else keep theirs?

There are three copies of our will - one is with the lawyer we worked with, one in our fireproof lock box in our house, and one at my mom and stepdad's house in their fireproof lock box.
We also store duplicates of most important paperwork in my mom's lock box - they live two miles from us, so we have easy access to them but it's unlikely something would ever happen to both houses at the same time.

One is in our safe, one is on file with the county probate court and our lawyer has one on file. Ideally, I'd like both sets of parents and our kid's guardians to also have a copy, but not there yet.
DH has specs on what it would take to make a safe truly fireproof and it involves concrete. He has it penciled in on the list of "nice to haves" for our future home addition .

The original will is with our lawyer. We might have a copy of it with all of our other important stuff but it’s not in safe let alone a fireproof one...should look into that! I assumed if something happened it would be provided by the lawyers office but maybe not?

Right now, the lawyer has a copy, we have a copy in our fire proof “safe” (I use safe loosely since we keep the key in the lock), and we have a digital copy, which I intend to upload to a google drive and share the info/ password with my dad, who is the executor. But I haven’t don’t that last step yet.
But I know for sure the lawyer will provide a copy of something happens- as long as someone knows to ask her!

We're about to sign ours and was planning to email our family members our lawyer's contact info so that if needed they could reach out to him for a copy.

@graceandjoy: it was my New Years resolution last year! It’s all done except I haven’t sent the info to my dad on where to find it. I should at the very least tell him the lawyers name!

The lawyer has a copy, there is one in our fire proof safe, saved on our hard drive and I emailed a copy to my brother (executor) and my Dad.
My goal for this year is to put together a file with all of our important documents including bank account information so that it can be easily found if something happens to us.

Our lawyer has a copy (I think) and we have a copy in our fireproof safe and then we had to file it at the court office in the town close to us for storage.
