And your first were the same gender, do you also have a child of the opposite gender?
Like if your first two were girls, was your third a boy? or your fourth? I didn't put five kids on the poll because it's less common these days.

I voted cookies because I only have the two (well, one is still baking).
But my MIL had 3 boys, my mom had 3 boys then a girl, and my SIL had 3 boys, a girl, then 2 more boys! ETA: My aunt had two girls then a boy!

@BandDmommy: @oliviaoblivia: I really want a girl (just found out LO2 is another boy) but I'm confident the odds are not in my favor. I have no plans to have a third unless we feel our family is incomplete.

I've heard that when you have two of the same, it's statistically more likely that the 3rd will be the same again. Seems to me it should always be a 50/50 shot but my friend told me about a legit study that had these findings.

@ladybee: it's 50/50. Just curious if it's another boy would you be ok with that?

@Truth Bombs: I've heard the same. That there is only a 25%-30% chance of the opposite gender.
squash / 13764 posts
@Truth Bombs: yep I have heard that as well, and looked up the study actually--it's a very small percentage, but it is there.

@BandDmommy: right now, while I'm still dealing with my gender disappointment, no. After I see my two boys together? Maybe. I have no intention of getting pregnant again unless I am 100% happy with adding a boy to our family.

LO#1 is a girl, LO#2 is a boy, LO#3 is a boy, and LO#4 (due at the end of December) is another boy!

On my dads side of the family, no one has a mix...one aunt has 3 boys, one uncle has 3 girls, my dad has 4 girls, and my other aunt has 3 boys. It's crazy!

My grandmother had two girls and then three boys.
My FIL had four girls, a boy, a girl, a boy, and then two more girls.
You never know.

I have 3 but had a boy than a girl. My 3rd was another girl.

@ladybee: I believe it was phrased as it was like 5% more likely to have a boy after two boys, rather than a girl, or something like that (not sure of the actual percentage). This is similar I remember, although this is obviously not a scholarly article!

@BandDmommy: two wives. My MIL had boy, girl, girl. The dads are responsible for the Y chromosomes though.

@ladybee: good question. We are having our second girl and at those point I just feel like we would only ever have girls. Of course before my toddler was born I felt like we would only have boys, so clearly my feelings aren't that reliable.
i knew one family growing up who had something like 8 girls before having a boy! They even named the last girl after the dad (Joanna instead of john) since it seemed they would never have a boy to name after him. But I do believe they wanted lots of kids, regardless of sex.
pomelo / 5660 posts
@oliviaoblivia: of course! That's just a lot of kids by one woman. :).

@oliviaoblivia: dad is responsible for X or Y, but I have heard possibly the ph balance in the womb can affect the sex determination? Either how the x or y sperm get through or which eggs get to implant? Totally not sure I read that in any actual study though.

This is ruining my night I've got two boys and am hoping that when we are ready for a third it will be a girl...

@Foodnerd81: I know you understand my feelings in this, we are just dealing with opposite genders.
@hilsy85: thanks, interesting information

Honestly I just think this is one of those things you can't predict. My mom's family had 2 boys first and then 4 girls!! My husband's family had 3 boys and then a girl and then 2 more boys and then a girl.
I think the reason it's so common these days to see sibling sets that are all boys or all girls is because most people stop at 2 or 3 and then odds of having all of one gender are higher with that then if they kept going like people used to more frequently back in the day. I think it's quite rare for someone to have lots of kids but only have one gender -- although it does happen!

So I don't have that many but anecdotally from my family it seems to be that if #1 and #2 are the same it is more likely they all all be. My mom's brother had 3 boys and my dad's sister had 4 girls. But my grandma had 2 girls and then a boy. So maybe not hopeless

@knittylady: I'm with you. I was hoping people would come out of the wood work saying they had two boys and then a girl so I don't feel like it's hopeless.

@coopsmama: There is Katie Bower! (bower power blog). 4 boys in a row... wowza! she seems to love it

I know two girls I went to high school with that have 4 kids. One has 4 girls and one has 4 boys.
My grandma was one of 6 kids. 2 girls, then boy, then 3 more girls.
I have 2 boys and we want a third LO eventually. I'm pretty much assuming I'll have another boy, but I don't really have a preference. I'd love a girl, but my boys are awesome and I've already kinda accepted I'll be a boy mom.

@ladybee: i have 2 boys and am having a girl in a few weeks! I was pretty surprised! we had been hoping for a girl, but I could hardly imagine it at that point! haha

I only have two, but my parents had four girls. My sister had two girls then a boy. My MIL had a boy, a girl, three boys, a girl, then a boy.

This reminded me of this family restaurant we go to. The family history on the menu talks about the mom and dad who started their business with nothing more than their TEN sons!
My mom had two girls and two boys
My grandma had 8 kids: boy girl boy girl all the way through
Other grandma: boy girl girl boy girl

I have two girls so far, but I'm the oldest of five and our order was:
girl-girl-boy-girl-boy. And my aunt had four: boy-boy-girl-girl

I have 2 boys and would be shocked to ever have a girl even if we had 10 more kids. Based on my family alone it is rare to have 2 of the same followed by the opposite but I can think of several with 3+ of the same sex in a row.

My family (4 kids - I'm the oldest) is girl-girl-boy-girl. My mom's family growing up was the same. My husband is one of three boys. We have one boy so far but I'm totally prepared to have all boys!
