...what percentage of your day is expected to be billable? My old job expected at least 80% billable. My new job, you record your hours for clients, but it's informational - billing isn't based on your hours - I'm really struggling on still worrying if I'm recording enough or too much time for tasks!

When I first started in my career my goal was 95%. A decade later my goal is currently 65% but at my previous company (less than a year ago) my goal was 85%. And our billings are still based on hours.

At my old job, we were expected to be 95%+, I've never been told at my new job (ive been here 3 years) so I don't know.

My old job wanted at least 6.5 hours billable to client work every day. But even that was frowned upon, they really expected us to do at least 8 hours as an unwritten rule (and to be honest it was usually more. We were highly understaffed).
It was a small company so it was pretty informal (meaning our boss just made stuff up and that's what we went with.)

I just have to bill hours per year so I try and average that out per day. Can you determine your efficiency (how much is billed for the task versus how much time you actually spent) to determine if you are on track?

My company assumes a 10-hr day (uh, right, whatever). My employees have a 70% target, so 7 hours per day. I have a 40% target, so 4 hours per day, since I am supposed to spend part of my time managing my employees, being a training resource/reference, and helping with sales efforts.

When I used to work on billable time, we had to bill 95% as a staff but as we were promoted those numbers shrank 5-10% each promo.
