Anyone live in a floodplain zone? How much do you pay for flood insurance? We just looked at a house last night that is in a 100 year floodplain and although it's just a tiny brook and hasn't flooded in a looong time, we still have concerns.
Just curious about others experiences.

@petunia354: My parents do and when they were considering purchasing the house they had the real estate agent find out from the current owners how much (approx.) they were paying.
She also called their existing insurance company and had them do an estimate so they had an idea of the potential cost.

When we bought our house it was in a 100 year flood zone but it recently got rezoned. Flood insurance was pretty expensive. I don't remember the exact amount, but it was significantly more than our homeowners insurance. I agree that you can call to get a quote.

@petunia354: just wanted to chime in and say that you may have to do some research on changing flood insurance rates. I don't live in a flood zone, but there has been some movement in Congress about the national insurance program recently. Rates were set to go up, but in some places, the number was going to be ridiculous. Just last week, though, they passed a bill to void those changes, so rates won't get ridiculous.
I don't know what that does to your potential rate, but just wanted to make you aware

@petunia354: I don't think that our was that expensive, but it was definitely more than homeowners. I would call another insurer for a quote. We have our homeowners and car insurance through USAA and they gave us a pretty good deal on flood insurance.

@petunia354: how far is the house into the 100 year flood plan? We are in the 500 year but not the 100 year. We don't buy flood insurance.

@petunia354: that's why I was saying to ask about the new legislation! I heard a story that with the new zones, there were people's who went from $400 a year to $17,000 a year (no, that's not a typo!) That's why there was such a HUGE uproar. I wonder if there's a way to see if that's a recent increase that might go back down?

I pay $500 a year. It's a little creek that hasn't flooded in 100 yrs. (There was actually a huge train wreck where the creek flooded and the train went in.) But since then, nothing.

Well turns out the house is under contract so it was a lot of worry for nothing. At least I'll know for the future!

I am in a flood zone, in Canada, and we get coverage but it dowsmt include Sewer back up which is more common. We have overland flooding which is standard in insurance.

My inlaws do and they pay the insurance but the CT river is basically in their backyard so it's risky for them not to have the insurance.

Your insurance agent can do a flood determination for you, all of our flood policies have doubled this past year. Most of them cost more than the clients homeowners insurance.
