Those who pay (or collect) rent - do you write physical checks or do you pay online somehow? If you pay online, what service do you use? Paper checks seem so outdated to me!

Paper at our last four apartments! It's the only check we write lol

Snail mail! Maybe because it's not a complex and an individually owned house the landlord doesn't bother with setting up an electronic system...

Paper checks/snail mail! This is the only check I write. I just had to order new checks this year, for the first time since I opened my account in 2001

Old building I paid by visa or debit. This apartment is a smaller company so they only take paper cheques.

I've always paid with a paper check. I've always lived in apartments owned by an individual vs. a managed complex. In one case my landlord requested cash, lol.

Both? Haha. We have it electronically set up through our bank (online bill pay).. they draft a check and mail it to our landlord automatically each month. In all previous apartments we had to hand deliver checks. I wish more landlords would get with the program and accept debit cards!

Paper for all our apartments. Now that I own, I've started paying online, but only since having the baby. It feels weird to not send a check!

oh man i'm surprised by how many pay with paper checks!!!
I'm a landlord and HATE paper checks because then i have to go to the bank (though recently my bank added an app that i can just take a picture of... but doesn't work with every kind of check).
We had online rent pay through a company intuit owns, and most of our tenants paid through that. But we just got an email that it is being discontinued
I was hoping there'd be some other options out there but i'm not finding much while googling.... Seems like it should be easier to get a service like that, but it's not!

Online bill pay through my credit union. Electronic for me but my landlords still get a check in the mail.

Electronically. They have an online system. Our last place required paper checks and we were SO bad about remembering to write a check and drop it in the box for rent. Like sometimes we wouldn't even get around to it until mid-month. Yet they never complained to us....I bet they didn't even check the box right away, haha.

Snail mail. we weren't presented with another option!

Paypal for me! Super easy! I think this is legal because we pick the 'friends & family' option (no fees for either of us) and we aren't transferring goods.

He likes money orders, which is a giant PITA. There's a drop box in the building for them. It would be so much easier to pay online! I'd love that!

(Landlord). Our tenants pay via paper check, but they also have the option to pay via paypal. Though, if they pay via paypal and it charges me a fee, they are responsible for paying the fee (this is in our lease). I hate dealing with paper checks, but it is what it is. I wish there was a better service for this!

When I lived alone... gosh 8 years ago! I lived in a complex that only took checks... you had to put in this wooden box at the leasing office at the begining of the month. When DH and I started living together... his complex did it all electronic. I think it "depends". My complex was super old and his was pretty new.

@MrsSCB: do you know what system they use? Is it a website?
@bluestriped bee: I would love to use paypal, but we have a business that owns the rentals and my husband is an accountant, so we don't want to use the friends and family and get in trouble for not counting it as a business (since it is a legal business) and risk his CPA license...
We're looking at some different websites... this seems like a good one:

Our bank (BofA) will send a check to anyone. So we just schedule bills for them to send the check to. It works great.

Our renter has his bank send us a check each month. I deposit it with my phone so I don't have to go to the bank.

Snail mail for the past 5 apts. one had an online option but was $75 more per month if we used it! F that!
pomelo / 5257 posts
@LaughLines: I don't, I'm sorry
I just tried to figure it out on their website but didn't see any indicator if they're using an outside system. It might just be their own proprietary system. But we're basically just paying through our bank account. Like we registered our account on their resident website (which requires a login) using our routing and account numbers.

Paper checks and we usually drop them off at his workplace since it's 5 mins away.

When we rented we had to write paper checks. It was so silly. I understood when I lived in smaller houses or places owned by a family but when I moved to a big complex I thought it was dumb.
pomelo / 5678 posts
Our last place was electronic, but here they charge you extra - so we have to hand deliver it to the company!
pomegranate / 3375 posts
@T.H.O.U.: I wish we had that! We pay by check each month, and our landlords never cash until at least the 20th. Ugh. It's so frustrating. Our bank offers bill pay, but the funds would still be in limbo until our landlords cashed the check.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
Always paper checks when I/we rented. One of the best things about buying a house was setting up automatic electronic payments!
grapefruit / 4671 posts
When we rented, we did paper cheques. I never once had a landlord in NYC that accepted any other form of payment.

All the apartments the DH and I have ever lived in have allowed us to pay online. But we don't live in an apartment anymore and I don't remember what services they used.
persimmon / 1270 posts
Last place we had to get bank checks and they would pick them up. Those place we mail a check in the envelope left with the invoice every month. It feels so much easier. They did deposit our check for the wrong amount once. That was annoying.
