I always feel a little weird when talking to someone about an upcoming or past appointment, because the phrase I want to use is, "We went to the doctor," or, "I had a doctor's visit," or "At my doctor's appointment." For some reason, swapping in the word midwife sounds weird and catches on my tongue! So now I usually just say, "appointment," without saying doctor OR midwife. But if I slip up and say "doctor" I don't correct myself.

I say "seeing the midwives" or something like that. Or just "my next appointment" if talking to my mom or best friend who will know it's one of my pregnancy checkups.

I just called it an appointment. Sometimes I'd call it a doctor's appointment, depending on who I was talking to - I didn't need to get into a discussion with my boss, for example, about seeing a midwife versus a doctor.

@Mrs. Chalk: Same-- it depends who I'm talking to. With family I'll say midwife appt, but at work, it's easier to just say 'doctor's appt'. My midwives are in the hospital, though, so it's not really that different, they way I imagine it would be if they were at an independent birthing center or I was planning a home birth, which is what I feel like people would picture if they weren't knowledgeable about MWs.

I guess I'm just weird! I don't know why its so hard for me to say "midwife." Maybe I am subconsciously self-conscious about it!

@Mrs. Chalk: @Foodnerd81: That definitely comes into it for me as well! I feel like if you see a midwife, that is automatically "different" than a doctor and you have to explain it?
Though even with people like my mom that know I am going to a midwife, I still say "doctor's appointment" from time to time!

It depends on who I'm talking to too... most people I know are cool with midwives, so I say that. If it's a stranger or someone who's judge-y I'll say "checkup."

I just say I'm going to my midwife appointment. I've never had anyone question it or say anything about it ... but then the majority of my friends all had midwives - and they're really common around here.

just a midwife appointment. dr. vs. midwife isn't even a debate here. everyone uses a midwife as far as i know, unless your pregnancy is too high risk then you might see a dr on the side as well.

before when i saw an ob (pregnancy #1) i'd call them ob appointments. i miss my ob!!

@Penny Lane: @Ginger333: Where do you live that midwives are more common? I feel a little crunchy seeing a midwives practice, even though I am delivering in the hospital.
@Shutterbug: Ugh, I know! Haha - I am 12 weeks now (time flies!) but I will not out myself until I am 100% public, because I know some people in real life that read Hellobee. Hopefully it won't be too much longer but I am waiting to tell work!

@knockedup_nowwhat: I also feel a little crunchy - I'm delivering in a hospital, but in an area where midwives are NOT common at all (North/Central Ontario). I get lots of raised eyebrows, but I love my midwives anyways.

It varies. I see both the OB and midwife with my practice so it depends. Usually I just refer by the doctors last name or the midwife's first name
That's also how the office refers to them.

There were midwives and doctors at my practice and I saw several of both. I called all the appointments 'doctor appointments' though.
I had trouble asking my boss for time off for my doula "appointments" at first because I thought that sounded strange. By the end of my pregnancy I was so amped about my doula (and her massages) I told everyone in the office when it was "doula day."
