I find it interesting that so many of you listed independence so high! I tend to think you don't need to TEACH a child independence, it seems to come pretty naturally. Responsibility? sure! But the desire to be on their own seems to come at a young age.

@Mrs. Pen: @mrs. bird: @wonderstruck: I think it's interesting to see everyone's answers. My answers are definitely influenced by my job (teacher), because I feel like these days, so many kids are taught to value self-expression over anything else, to the detriment of society really (IMO).

The majority of kids these days have been taught that they are special and rules are for other people-- whichbisnsignifocsntlynmprenexpensive I rated responsibility and determination higher and self-espression second to last before religion.

I guess I'm super socialistic where I think the good of society is more important than than the individual's self expression (to a point).

I'm also a curmudgeon who likes dress codes in schools and proms and no crazy hair colors or piercings at school, ha. Again , all that is influenced by my job since I've had very few (if ever) great students who were very concerned with self-expression in those outlets, haha.

@Mrs. Pen: I had the same line of thought. I think the ability for independence comes out of learning hard work and perseverance so I ranked those much higher. I don't picture myself being a helicopter parent by any means and don't plan on not fostering independence. But it's not something I rank highly as a value I need to teach. I'm sure when LO is a teenager that perspective will be very different though!! Right now, my main concern in that area is getting LO to ask for help when he needs it instead of whining.

I also ranked obedience very low. LO's behavior is very important to me. But it's more about teaching him respect and appropriateness than getting him to obey. As a stand alone value that doesn't mean much to me.

@Anagram: Hey now, I was a super-involved, honor society, teacher's pet who also happened to have blue/purple hair and a lip ring Well, the minute I turned 18, anyways, since my parents hated it and said no. I know it totally drove them nuts, but they pretty much just rolled their eyes and ignored it, and a year later I did a work-study program that required I lose the funky hair and the lip ring, so it was pretty temporary.

@keepcalmcarrie: I'm always curious when people express this viewpoint - what would you do if your teenager came home with a piercing or tattoo on their 18th birthday? Most teens are still in high school when they turn 18.

ETA: I guess I'm just curious because I was a rebellious teen as far as that stuff goes. I mean, I got good grades, held down a job, did lots of chores around the house, was way over-involved in school (National Honor Society, editor of school paper, marching band, figure skating, etc.)...but I still did the crazy hair senior year, and got my lip pierced the second I turned 18. My parents were against it, but I never really saw the big deal - although I suppose it depends on your definition of permanent, since hair can be dyed back and piercings can be removed. I wasn't rebellious enough to think that thinking a tattoo looked cool as a teenager meant I would still like it when I was 40 I just imagine that it would be difficult to enforce a rule like that, and well, once it's done it's done.

@wonderstruck: Honestly, I'd be really upset. I'm not sure what I'd "do" beyond being upset - I guess parenting a teenager will give me a better understanding, it's hard to imagine right now when he's just 14 months!

It's nothing against others who have tattoos or piercings - I have several close friends with tattoos and piercings, and they are obviously great people! But several of them have mentioned that they regret those modifications, especially the ones they got in high school (one friend in particular is trying to remove her back tattoo).

I have very liberal political beliefs, but I've always been pretty conservative about my appearance. Maybe it sounds boring, but it's just how I'm comfortable and I think it's safer (I don't wish I'd never gotten one piercing in each ear, for instance). So I would be sad that LO did something possibly permanent that he might later regret. I don't think 18 is really old enough to make many permanent decisions. I know I'm glad I didn't make any as a senior in high school!

ETA - I see your point too. The friend with the back tattoo was VP of our high school's national honor society as well. I know it doesn't reflect anything about the inside of a person. I am just uncomfortable with what I think of as permanent changes to a teenager's body. But as you said, what's done is done - if LO came home with a piercing or tattoo, I guess I'd just go cry in my room. Did you see the recent SNL skit about a game show with your mom, where the one son wanted ear gauges and she was all "Oh no, Jeremy, your beautiful ears." I'm that Mom

@keepcalmcarrie: Yeah, I can imagine regretting whatever kind of back tattoo I thought looked cool at age 18! I added a bit to my post (probably as you were typing), I guess it's just harder for me to understand since I did the crazy hair/piercings thing and it didn't affect anything other than me thinking I looked cool for the one year I had them, haha. I would be really upset about a tattoo though too, also not sure what I would actually do about it...I guess I just hope that I'd be able to talk them out of it, particularly if it's something really stupid.

@imbali: Haha, NO, I would not hate them! Perhaps I'm coming across as a little more extreme about this than I really feel. I just don't want my own LO making permanent body changes. No judgment here about what others are okay with for their littles - especially when they're not so little anymore!
