Newp. If your LO pulls down the breathable bumper, she'll just pull down the padded bumper too. I was worried about my LO thrashing around (she sleeps all over the place!), but she has done fine without the padded bumper. (I took it out when she started to pull down on it so that she could watch for me to come through the door : / )

My LO pulled on his breathable bumper also, but we kept it on his crib. He's a crazy sleeper so we needed it to keep him from getting stuck in between the slats, and he eventually lost interest in pulling on it.

@shopaholic: We picked ours up at BRU - it's 2 breathable pieces that attach with velcro and also has 2 points that attach with ties. I removed the ties when he first attacked it, and it's held up since with the velcro alone.

@shopaholic: Darn. We slid/wedged a portion of it down between the mattress and the crib slats, and also weaved it in between the slats. He even steps on it now, and it bounces right back.

If you did end up wanting to get something (I was torn when LO was banging his head on the crib bars a lot), I ended up getting Miracle Bumpers - they're vertical padded bumpers that wrap around each bar, so they can't pull them down, and there are no strings (they zip onto the bars, and the zipper is at the bottom below the mattress). They're really great.

@shopaholic: does she wear a sleep sack? it helps keep their feet in. but, my LO loves to sleep with his head smooshed against the slats so no bumper advice here

Not worth it. We used a padded bumper from the start, but took it off once she started crawling and pulling up around 8 months.

We don't have any bumpers - DD burrows in the corner to fall asleep, so her head is always against the wood, but it doesn't seem to bother her...
When she was younger and learning how to move around in her crib, she got her leg stuck twice, but nothing since then
