I'm toying with the idea of this. I have a BA and an MA. I'd prefer to get a second masters than another undergrad though. Or an associates. Ideas?

Something that would get a job in oil. Man they are making a killing right now.

What's your previous degree in? Communication has one of the lowest unemployment rates aside from STEM programs.

What are your current degrees in?
I would go take IT classes at my local comm college or get a library sciences degree.

I have no idea. Unfortunately majors that are easy to find a job and make money with just don't interest me.

I am going back to school! Hopefully I get accepted to the nursing progrm...
Women in IT or engineering make a good living. But I know I wouldn't be good at either of those. I def value happiness wherever I work..

Planning and regional development! A useful geography field, unlike my degree!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I work at a university and health professions majors are our quickest growing area. Lot's of jobs there (nursing, pharmacy, physicians assistant, physical therapy, respiratory care, etc.)
If I could go back to school for anything, my first choice would be writing/editing/publishing and my second choice would be counseling. In reality, I might get a masters in education.

@Mrs. Jacks: @mediagirl: technical writing! But in a rural area the opportunities are limited. And I'm not sure I want to move at the moment....
I'm thinking speech therapy since it is something I could do in two years probably? Either transfer credits to get another undergrad or get a masters.
@artbee: Lol I agree! Which is why I'm stuck with two useless ones!
GOLD / nectarine / 2884 posts
@cmomma17: thanks for this!
But please don't get a degree in education or writing. I have both and they've done me no good! I see my teacher friends getting laid off all the time. But the years I spent in school were irreplaceable. I don't regret them!
@mediagirl: after speech, IT is my second idea. Just not sure I wanna end up working a helpdesk though!

I would get an AA in web development, an MBA and I personally want my PHD in Computer Science and Information Systems

@Mrs. Sketchbook: have you tried a site like http://teamtreehouse.com ? It's a good way to learn about technology and if you finish the online courses, you can pretty much get a job in tech!
grapefruit / 4187 posts
yup - web development/computer science. I would strive to be an on-site tech person for a large company - those people make so much money and can usually dress any way they want for work and have great hours.

Maybe something in the healthcare field. My liberal arts degrees are pretty much pointless with no grad school.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I work in IT, and IT is made up of WAY more than helpdesk folks. There are server people, network people, security people, application people, database people, etc etc. But yeah, last place I'd want to be is helpdesk too...

I would go into something with IT. Building websites, intranets, etc. Or nursing.
GOLD / nectarine / 2884 posts
@jillybean218: I worry that since I wouldn't be young, new graduate I'd get stuck with the worst jobs! Plus, living in a rural area means helpdesk-type jobs are more common than other opportunities. I would be willing to move, but that would involve putting our house on the market, which would suck!

@mrsjazz: Nursing has seen a huge explosion in our area; in fact, two of my close relatives recently completed nursing school. They both have jobs! But their benefits have recently been cut. I am wondering if nursing is the new education bubble? Like pharmacy was in the early 2000s?

For those saying web development....I used to work at a tech firm and they always made the engineers and programmers do the websites in their free time. And they made the IT people do graphics in their free time. They refused to pay anyone to make a website! I wonder if that is more common these days? I know I used to work as a secretary and did a lot of graphic design.....my boss knew I had the degree in tech comm so they hired me for both!

@mrbee: oh awesome thank you! I was considering one of the groupon Cisco classes. Are those a scam? When we sent engineers to those classes at one of my previous jobs they were like, 2,000 dollars and sleep away....!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: my BA is in communication. I say education, only because it is the most appealing choice out of what my university offers. I qualify for free education as an employee so I want to hopefully take advantage of that. The options are business (probably the smart choice job-wise), education, or "organizational leadership." Only education appeals to me (like I would be excited to take the classes). Business bores me and the organizational leadership degree does not make any sense to me no matter how many times I read the description or the courses offered. Org. leadership is the program most employees are encouraged to go into so I think they use it to "groom" staff.
The education masters has a reading specialist option, and I've always been really interested in literacy.

nursing. except i hate math and people are gross and icky beings. *barf*

@Mrs. Sketchbook: time of my life!!! I always wanted to be a SAHM anyway.

I have a degree in English (creative writing emphasis). It was a great launching pad to medicine. If you could do any career in the world, what would it be?
grapefruit / 4079 posts
@cmomma17: in Ohio literacy specialist with a reading endorsement are going to be state mandated for kids who don't pass out state achievement test. I teach special education and love it.

DH's friend knew he hated having to socialize with people. So he went to school to become an undertaker. Worked in Japan for a while where he got paid well (since there's a Japanese taboo about touching the dead). Just a random story regarding what kind of work suits certain people.
But to answer the question posed, had I to do it all over again, I'd have tried to go into electrical engineering/computer science.

so many things i wish I'd done instead of my degree.
DH wants me to go back and get a JD.
I would want to do something in IT or healthcare. probably nursing or midwifery
honeydew / 7811 posts
@ladybee: interesting, maybe it's a growing field! I know we are seeing more and more college kids with poor reading skills!
Okay, I want to recruit all of you to come to the university I work for. We have a great nursing school, with an accelerated second degree program for people who already have a bachelors in something else. We also have midwifery and occupational therapy.
honeydew / 7811 posts
@Penny Lane: Ina May Gaskin just spoke at my university's graduation in May! We have a midwifery degree, my cousin is in that program now.
