Would you have an elevator put in?
Would you have an elevator put in?
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
No, but I would build a laundry room on the second floor with all the bedrooms for SURE!
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
Id be too scared I'd get stuck in the elevator. And nobody would be around to get me out.
honeydew / 7230 posts
Um, no. Do people really do this? I guess maybe if I had kids that I unloaded out of the car all the way in the basement and then needed to get them upstairs easier? But still no.
@prettylizy: Our laundry room is on the 2nd floor with our rooms - love that feature!

if i needed it to be handicap accessible (if planned on having elderly parents living with us or had a SO or child who currently had a handicap that made stairs challenging for them) i would, otherwise no.
persimmon / 1379 posts
I am with @twodoghouse in saying is that really a thing that happens? Heck to the no I wouldn't. Just like if I happened to build a house with a third level master suite, there would be no elevator!
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@prettylizy: definitely putting our laundry room on the 2nd level!
@twodoghouse: @mrs. bird: @woodentulip: yep. I tutored a girl back in 1996 and her parents had an elevator in their home.
Our builder says most homes being built these days have a spot built in for an elevator--in case there's a need for an elevator to be installed in the home in the future (disability, etc)
We're having that little spot built in for sure (will help with resale of our home in the future).

My aunt and uncle installed an elevator when they built because they were planning for old age. I wouldn't. They are loaded and can spend on things that are frivolous for 99.9% of people, so...there's that.
pomegranate / 3329 posts
I'd think about having a spot built for it if it were going to be my forever home.
We lived in a 3 story home when I was in middle school and it had a dumbwaiter, not fancy and mostly used for firewood and groceries.
I only know of one family who has the largest fanciest home I've ever seen (about 10,000 sq ft and on a lake), they have an elevator, but also have elderly parents living in the same home.

No - I don't like elevators! If I was disabled, for sure though. Actually, I would probably buy a rambler if I was disabled.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
My parents have one, as do most of the people in my neighborhood. I guess it's just normal to me.
pineapple / 12526 posts
Nope. Maybe if I was disabled or I had a disabled child or something, though.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
I know several people that have them.
I agree, at a basic level its good to build a home for the potential for it to be upgraded to accommodate a wheelchair. This also includes wide doorways, bathroom on the main floor, etc.
I probably wouldnt' put an elevator in but at least a spot for it.
I would be so worried about the laundry on the 2nd floor. I think I would put it in the basement with a shoot to drop the laundry down.
grapefruit / 4235 posts
Maybe if I was expecting elderly parents to move in at some point, or if it was our "forever" home...or if I lived in an area with a large retiree population.
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
I've never heard of such a thing! I have a two story house + basement and that just seems wasteful to me....
nectarine / 2797 posts
I wouldn't put one in but it makes sense to design the house that it could accomodate one if needed as long as it wouldn't impact useable space significantly.
coconut / 8472 posts
It depends on how much it costs and how long we plan to stay in the house. My mom has debilitating arthritis (has had both hips replaced, getting both knees this spring) and it would be nice to be able to have her visit without worrying about stairs. And pretty much everyone on her side of the family has this condition, so I'm expecting to get it too. So if we're going to stay in the house forever, it might be worth the investment.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
No, not unless we had a family member that needed it or we could see an immediate family member needing it in the near future.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
No elevator, but I would want a laundry shute and dumb waiter large enough to hold a laundry basket.
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
No, you will probably never use it anyway. House elevators are not fast, at all. You can walk upstairs faster than using the elevator, and really...if a house is being built where you think you need an elevator because of all the floors, try adding less floors.
watermelon / 14206 posts
@MrsTiz: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I grew up with a laundry chute, too! Made life a little easier for my mom.
pomegranate / 3160 posts
An elevator?! Nope. Definitely not the norm around here...at all.
watermelon / 14467 posts
Definitely not. But house elevators aren't common here at all. I would love to have a laundry chute though!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@chopsuey119: hahaha you're joking, right?
To answer your question no but maybe a dumbwaiter?
bananas / 9899 posts
Never unless I become handicapped, and probably not even then. They are so expensive to put in and fix if every something breaks.
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@chopsuey119: @twodoghouse: @prettylizy: Our laundry is on the second floor and it used to be one of my favorite features about the house. But now.... I haaaaaate it! The machines wake LO so I can never get laundry done while she's sleeping! I'm a WOHM and she's still so little that after I get home from work she has a nap and goes to bed pretty soon after that so it's impossible for me to do laundry during the week so I have to cram it all in on the weekends and plan it around nap times. Bleh!

It would be cool if I had the money but having a spot for it built into the floor plan is a good idea. I saw a listing for a mansion have one.
honeydew / 7230 posts
@MamaMoose: I never thought about that! (We don't have kids yet). Our washer/dryer is so old (and loud!) that I wonder if this will become a huge issue when we do have kids.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Huh, had no idea this was a normal thing! There are some super nice homes in this area but none have elevators
kiwi / 691 posts
@artbee: me too! I won't take the elevator at work unless someone else is in it too!
