E's nana bought her some hello kitty rainboots - E LOVES cats (she was meowing at the boots for a half hour!) and loves the color pink, so naturally, she is going crazy for hello kitty. DH hates hello kitty so he really isn't excited for E being able to voice wanting HK clothing, toys, etc. in the future.
Would you let your child wear a character that you don't care for?

That being said, if it was HK but she loves HK I would let her. But if it was say like she idolized Hannah Montana, then that would be a no.

As long as there was nothing inappropriate about the character and it was just my dislike, then yes I would let C wear it.

I wouldn't have an issue as long as the character isn't doing anything lewd and there are no double meanings to the text.

Yes, I definitely would! My son wanted to wear the same mickey mouse shirt for a week and as much as it pained me (I had just bought him a bunch of cute shirts from BabyGap), I let him wear it. He was so happy, I couldn't say no.

Agreed with the above. It would depend on why I hated it. If I just found it annoying, I don't think that gives me the right to dictate what my child is or isn't allowed to like/have. If it's a bad role model or something I dislike for moral reasons, I would explain that and yes, not allow it. I'm not sure how that would play out as they got older. I think it'd become tricky when they're teens. Gotta pick your battles, right?

Also, that being said, I'd probably try redirecting interest and those sorts of things when shopping. I don't think that's really wrong, so long as you're careful about being manipulative/making them feel bad for liking something you don't.

Depends. If I just happen to not like it for no real reason.... yes she can wear it. I was actually one of those moms who said my LO wouldn't wear character clothes at all, and I have since made her an Elmo shirt, and DH bought her one.

I hate Hello Kitty in a serious way. So at this point (LO is nine months old) the few HK pieces that my husband's grandparents gave her ended up in the back of the closet. But if she was at an age where she had an opinion and wanted to wear them I would let her. (assuming, as the others said, this character did not have inappropriate associations).

I don't think I would let my future kid wear anything I don't like. Obviously, there are exceptions to every rule. But if you don't like the hello kitty stuff, just get rid of it.

My friend tried SO hard to discourage anything remotely overly girly and character related.
She ended up with a daughter who loves Hello Kitty, pink, purple and tutus. So.....I guess perhaps "the best laid intentions" don't always come to pass...

We are pretty much a no character family, however if it is gifted then that is another story. However, DH is very against animal prints of any kind so that is a big no no in our household.

Ugh character clothing. I really hope my kids are not into wearing characters. That being said if it was a gift and not completely hideous I will likely let them wear it.
I don't get how something becomes infinitely better with a character on it, but for some it does. Maybe that's a precursor to desiring luxury brands...

So long as it isn't inappropriate, I'm ok with it. I'm not opposed to licensed merchandise, I just don't want heir closets to be filled to the brim with just that.

Oh, we're probably luddites, but we don't do any characters... Solves the problem!
The only exception is gifts from grandparents, because kids love everything their grandparents give them... but we would probably do those items in small doses.
