...what did you do to encourage him/her to like it? Our little guy was good in the k'tan for the first week or so, but at about 3 weeks started hating it (and the ergo and moby when we tried). Sometimes I can walk and bounce him down but more often than not I just take him out. Did you just push through until they got used to it? Wear at different times of the day? DH goes back to work next month and I really want to get baby wearing down before then. Help!

Forgot to add he is now 6.5 weeks and 14 pounds (I know, he is a little chunk monster).

C took to it pretty quickly, but the first few times I had to get her outside quickly and she would calm down. Being in the house in the carrier was torture, but when the fresh air hit she calmed right down. We kept the first several times very short as she got used to it. Eventually the moby became the only place she ever slept for about two months. She took longer to get used to our beco Gemini, I think she was just more comfy being wrapped in the moby while she was little (ha she wasn't 14 lbs until about 6 months!)

Yes. We just stopped and then started again when she got older. She hated it as a newborn, but didn't mind it as an infant or toddler. It's not something you can force, imo.

I gave up until they were a little older and big enough for the Ergo without the insert.

I put L in the Ergo (with insert) everyday - sometime when she seemed happy and sometime when I knew she would be sleepy. She fought it but I found going outside either to play with my toddler in the park close by or go for a walk pushing him (the toddler) in the stroller helped. Even if she was unhappy she had to deal with it until we got home. It took until at least 3 months for her to not fight it at the start of a session. Good luck!
Also, the Ergo with a rolled up blanket under the butt seems to be more comfy for her.

My LO didn't like being worn until she was at least 10 weeks. After that, she sort of tolerated it until she was big enough to see over the side of the carrier. Now she usually loves it. When she was little and didn't like it, we would just try, stop when she got upset, and then try again later.

@Foodnerd81: thanks. I've tried putting him in it outside when he gets sick of his stroller. But I think putting him in it already upset isn't helping anything.
It sort of seems like he just can't quite get comfy in any of them. And I can't tell if I should keep him in the newborn positions because he is young or move him to the baby positions (legs down) because he is so heavy and has decent neck control.

It sounds like I just need to keep trying until he is ready. Damn, I was hoping there was some baby wearing whispering trick.

Keep your attempts short and positive. Bum patting usually helps too. As soon as he starts fussing, take him out and try again tomorrow.

The main trick is to carry in a carrier in a way that mimics how they prefer to be held. Not all babies prefer to be held the same way, and so not all carriers/carries work for all kids.

@Mrs. Twine: I agree!! DS liked being upright so the Ergo worked well for him. He still fussed a bit, but nothing a bit of bouncing/butt patting wouldn't fix and he'd be out like a light!

I gave up until she was a but older (~3 mo). I think she hated having her legs froggied and not being able to see. Now that she's bigger, she loves the ergo. From 3-5 mo, however, she preferred to face out in the beco.

He likes being carried up high on our shoulders so he can look around. How big does he need to be to forward face?

@Zbug: Forward facing is typically discouraged across the board. But for sure he would need solid head-control (I'm not the BW police). I would educate myself on the recommendations and why FF is discouraged before trying it. If he has good head control a high back carry might work well for you. Or depending on your carrier you can get him higher up on your front to mimic how he likes being held. What are you working with?

@Mrs. Twine: my LO is now ten months. I did a lot of research and attended a baby wearing class where an expert suggested I try the beco. From my research, I concluded that forward facing in moderation (with an ergonomically designed carrier such as the beco) was appropriate for us. Our pediatrician also evaluated her head control and supported my decision. I didn't forward face her for long periods of time, but I flew alone with her quite frequently and needed to have her in a carrier.

@Little Misters Mom: I ended up putting C's legs out fairly early on- she got fussier being froggy style after a certain point. You could try that, and having him upright, with nothing holding his head- c hated if I put part of the wrap supportin her head so I just held my hand up to it. And yes try when he is in a good mood, but I completely understand why you wouldn't want to mess with a good mood!!
Out beco Gemini allows forward facing but it doesn't really work for us- it's less comfortable for me, and C doesn't seem to like it when I try it. She does seem happy with Dh does it though, same carrier. We didn't try it until she was at least five months old probably.

I have a moby and an ergo and my LO has never tolerated the moby even for a minute. I'm sure it didn't help that I also didn't like the moby. He resisted when we first got the ergo at around 2 months but loves it now at almost 4 months. It is only in the last week or so that he's enjoyed it and I think it has to do with the way he fits -- his legs fit out properly and he can see out the top.
Time seems to have been our magic trick.

Do you not have a stroller, or is there a reason that you are really tied to baby wearing? I feel like there were a lot of things that I thought I would do as a mom, but my child had other opinions. We were usually much happier, if I just listened to what she was trying to tell me. Maybe your son just isn't a baby wearing kid... or at least he isn't right now.

@Zbug: my son was the same way. If he were facing me, he would bury his face and scream hysterically or push and kick against me until I took him out. When he was about 4-5 months I forward-faced him in a recommended carrier and he LOVED it. I, personally, was only comfortable carrying him this way for short walks or errands but he was all smiles.
The forward facing carrier was very short lived because once he was big enough to put his arms up and over the Ergo, he loved it! I still occasionally carry him in the Ergo at 2.5 years old!

my son was very vocal about his dislikes - and there weren't that many, only the cold wipes and the Ergo when was tiny, but he would let it be known! I think all my neighbors knew, too lol

a lot of the time when she was little, she would cry as we got her into position, but would conk out after 10-15 minutes. so we powered through. even now as a toddler, she'll sometimes freak as we put her in, but then calm down. so it was worth it for us to push through. she never resisted for more than that though!

@Mrs. Twine: I've read some of the stuff about hip issues and FF but wasn't sure what the limits were or types of carriers. I'll research it, but We're months away from real head control either way. I have a moby, a k'tan and an ergo performance but I'm open to finding the right one. I haven't really heard of the beco before, sounds like something to look into.
@skibobrown I do have a stroller, but we live in a city and I find it cumbersome navigating the streets and metros system. Plus, the idea of being able to get stuff done around the house when he wants to be held for hours is appealing. But you're right, if he just doesn't like it there's not much I can do. My hope is that I'm doing something wrong and with some minor adjustment or the right carrier he'll like it. But I'm constantly searching for the magic bullet -the right swing for naps, a different pacifier, some cure all thing - that doesn't exist.
