What were the symptoms? My 5 week old caught his big sister's cold. Symptoms started on Thursday with a stuffy nose, goopy eyes and lots of sneezing. I talked to the nurse at my pediatrician's office and she said that as long as he doesn't run a fever, and he's still eating well, it's nothing to worry about. This morning he seemed like he was getting better, because he woke up with no goop in his eyes. But tonight, he started having a mild dry cough. Just like he's clearing his throat. I assume he just has some post nasal drip from the stuffed nose. He's still nursing great and sleeping well. Should the cough freak me out, or is it just part of the cold?

I wouldn't freak. Maybe if it became a hacking cough then I'd be concerned.

Mine has coughs, stuffy nose and runny nose (they alternate back and forth). My pediatrician wasn't at all concerned by the cough (I called after she'd had it for a few days to see what I could do to help it). They recommended a humidifier and using saline in her nose to help get everything loosened and cleared out to minimize post nasal drip.

My three week old got a cold this past week. We took him to the pediatrician because he was sneezing, sniffling, and had a cough. He became extremely fussy for a few days during the worst of it and would wake every hour for smaller feeds.
The pediatrician told us unless he had a fever we should not be concerned, and that it'd probably last for a week. He also recommended saline drops in the baby's nose. We've been keeping a close eye on him and while he still is a little congested, he's mostly back to normal.

Thanks all. I called the hospital nurse line and she said as long as no fever, and no struggling to breath he's fine. She suggest saline, hanging out in a steamy bathroom, and sleeping with a humidifier to break up the mucus and slow down post nasal drip. He slept a solid 4.5 hours before I woke him to eat.

Same age and same symptoms except wile also wound up with a fever and hospital stay. But his body fought it and the fever wouldn't have honestly seemed like a huge deal if he had been older. Hope your lo is better soon!

My DD caught a cold from DS at 3 weeks. She was really congested and we did everything that you mentioned in your comment from what the nurse said. I hope he gets over it quickly!

I would bring him in on Monday just so they can rule out wheezing and rsv. My pedi always wants to see newborns even with colds because rsv can develop quickly and it's hard for parents to detect wheezing. I am sure he is fine though.

I would take him to the doctor ASAP. DS1 had runny nose and cough at about 8 weeks. I called the nurse line over the weekend and they suggested saline and suction. The doctor called me on Monday after going over the weekend's calls and wanted to see him that day because of the symptoms and age. He tested positive for RSV and had to go in every day to be checked. On day 3 he had a low fever and was admitted into the hospital for observation. At that age, difficulty breathing can happen quickly and they'd rather already have him under observation. I'd rather be safe!

DD caught a cold at 2 weeks old. Lots of coughing sneezing congestion. Dr said as long as there is no fever and she's not lethargic it's fine. So sad to see a newborn with a cold

@Mamasig: @raintreebee: we already have an appointment Monday morning to see our primary ped. We'll watch him closely today and bring him in if there is any fever or signs of difficulty breathing

@Truth Bombs: Good! Hopefully, it's nothing, but after our experience, I'd recommend always getting checked.
