I didn't legally change my name (ie. birth certificate still has my maiden name) but I changed my last night on everything else except my passport and my credit card - waiting for both to expire so that I can renew with my new name.

I didn't change my birth certificate but I did legally change my name with social security, dmv and pretty much everything else.

can you change your name on your passport or credit card without legally changing your name?
to change anything i had to change it through the SSA, then my driver's license, then all the rest, with most of them requiring me to send a copy of my marriage certificate with the name change or new license.

lol you don't change birth certificates =)..... it'll always have your maiden name.
yes, i changed it everywhere, except for paypal. they wanted proof of marriage and i didn't want to send them my marriage certificate.

I did legally on everything necessary (e.g., license, passport, SS, etc.).

@birdofafeather: no, you can't without legally changing your name (for passport). with passport, i had to send them an original copy of my marriage certificate (they sent it back)....credit cards, seems they don't care... i just said i got married and my new last name was ___ and they just updated it for me. banks, on the other hand, wanted to see proof.

@tequiero21: Thats what I thought lol I got kinda lost there for a minute!

@tequiero21: I don't know if it's a Canadian thing, but I can legally change my name and have it show on a new issued birth certificate...I think...I'm starting to doubt myself now. Hmmm.
honeydew / 7968 posts
@Rubies: ahh. yeah, not sure about canada. in the US, you have to change it with the social security administration. i'm surprised other accounts let you change it without proof that you changed your name with the required administration.

Yup, I changed my name to my husband's last name. Most of my married friends did the same, except for a few that had to keep their last name for professional reasons.

I didn't change my name on my birth certificate, but I changed it everywhere else. I'm just waiting for my passport to expire next year so that I can get a new one. Its weird booking vacations under my maiden name because that's what my passport says.

@Rubies: You're right. It costs money, as do most things in the Canadian government, but you CAN have a new birth certificate issued if you want. There's no real point in having that done, though, because everything else can be changed without a legal change.
Also, I'm not getting a new birth certificate because I wasn't BORN as a Mason...I married into the name.

@redsmarties: Oh, thank goodness, I was starting to think I was losing my mind!

@Rubies: in Canada, you never actually change your name, unless you do it in court. But, when you get married, you are legally allowed to use either your maiden name or your married name. It's like getting an alias.
I've been very slow about getting my name switched. Driver's license, bank, credit cards are switched, but passport, telephone company, SSN, Revenue Canada are all maiden name.

No name changes for this professional girl! We've got two different names in this family.

That's weird to change your name on your birth certificate, since you weren't born with that name. Never heard of that!
I changed my name. I was sad about it for about a second because I don't have the same name as my family, but I quickly realized that I am still the same person and they're still my family. Plus, I have a new family

Yup. I hanged my name and took my maiden as my middle name.
I just changed it on my investments so I can contribute again but can't figure out how to change it for voter registration. Everything else, other has my car, is done. I guess I need to go to the license plate agency for my car? My license is done but my car title and loan is still in my old name. I figure when I get a new car, I'll change it then.

Yep, I changed my name on everything within a month after we got married, except it took a while longer for me to change my bank stuff. Now, I think I'm all changed over.

Nope, didn't change my name - already had one I liked have no plans to change my name.

I haven't yet, but I plan to as soon as we get back to the US, before we have a baby. I don't feel that I have to, I just don't mind doing it and it might make life easier, so why not.

I changed mine, though I think I still need to change the electoral roll.

Yes, I changed my name. I wanted all my family to share the same last name.

Yep, I changed mine. And I think I traded up - I like my married name much better than my maiden name.

I changed my name on everything. And had it done within 2 months of getting hitched! I was very efficient

I changed my name on everything pretty soon after getting back from the honeymoon.

I have it as my DH's last name on the marriage license, but have yet to change my last name...hopefully there's not a time limit on that type of thing.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
Yep, changed it - new last name is MUCH easier than the old one : )

I changed my name and made my maiden name into my middle name. Previously, my middle name was my mom's maiden name.

@Mrs. Jacks: What do you do about kid last names?
@winniebee: Your new one is fun, too, I'm slightly jealous. ;p
I changed mine, but getting it changed on everything took a little while because some places we're easier to deal with than others.
