Yesterday at work, while I was eating lunch, my throat and nose started swelling shut. The thing is, I didn't eat anything new! So now I'm afraid to eat!

@swedishfish: I should have gone to the ed but one of the nurses got me some benadryl and luckily that did the trick. I'm going to make an appt though.

Oh no! Just keep Benadryl nearby just in case until you can get to the doctor.

@swedishfish: I got it from the hospital cafeteria. It was a fish sandwich and mixed veggies. I went down and asked what kind of fish and veggies it was so I could have it for reference.
@Mrs. Sunshine: I got a bottle of 100 from the hospital pharmacy - I should be good for a while

@Ash: You can develop new allergies after pregnancy. A friend of mine became allergic to something new after each of her 3 kids

@shellio: that's what I was thinking but I wasn't sure if that was something that happened or not. Well now I'm even more worried!

@Ash: It's also possible that the food came into contact with something you're allergic to while it was being prepared.

@Ash: oh dear!! I developed allergies as an adult.. Look up oral allergy syndrome, especially if you get hay fever. I once swelled up while eating a salad at cpk that I had eaten tons of times before. It contains jicama which apparently I'm allergic to. Along with a ton of other fresh fruits and veggies. Whatever cross reacts with birch pollen. It started happening at 21 years old and each year I seem to become allergic to a new produce item

@shellio: so I looked into this and it's really common.
@mrs. wagon: oh my goodness! I'll look into that. How scary! I hope there's not a bunch of foods and it's just the one. Whatever one it is.
@ms.janedoe: Thanks

@Ash: yikes! Maybe an oil that one of those foods was cooked in? Or a spice?
As an adult I all of the sudden became allergic to soy, raw nuts and stone fruits (ie anything with a pit) and it did seem to happen over night! With soy I throw up, nuts I get itchy and the fruit (cherries are the worst) my throat and mouth swell. It is very scary, especially the first time it happened. Good luck!

Just be careful with the Benadryl. I have many allergies and carry an epi pen for nuts. Benadryl can reduce and hide the symptoms for a short period and then they can come back worse- especially of you are experiencing throat and mouth symptoms. I have been told many times by various doctors that Benadryl is fine for external reactions - rash, hives, or gi issues but once it hits your mouth and throat seek help. You don't want to be in the car driving home and hour later and they all come back!!
Doctors all have heir own opinions, as do we, just be careful!!! I have been there and understand the feeling and panic!!!

@mrs. wagon: I am the same way!! Pineapple is my be one lay year!! I am highly allergic to birch and maple, along with nuts and midly gluten. DH can't eat cherrieS, peaches, plums, red apples, as they all are related to the birch family. He is also allergic to Brazil nuts

@MrsScottish: I work in a hospital - no idea why I didn't go to the ed! My coworkers didn't take me seriously.
I'm hoping they give me an epi pen after I see the dr.
