I wish I had good news. It's not terrible, but not what I expected. My prolactin levels have gone up. I went from 141 to 168. It's odd considering the medication seemed to be working (getting a regulated cycle). He increased my dose. I'll find out in April whether or not it's decreasing.

@BabyBear: Oh boo. I wonder if it's an accurate test? You know how men have to do 3 sperm analysis to determine if the count is truely bad? Maybe this test can differ from day to day as well? It is a hormone and we all know how unpredictable they are!

I just got home from my RE follow-up, and there will be no IUI for me (at least not yet). My diagnosis is mild PCOS with insulin resistance, so starting tomorrow I'm on Metformin, and I'll start Clomid on day 3 of my next cycle.

I'm a little nervous about the Metformin side effects, since I already have a sensitive stomach, but I'm glad we can put off IUI or anything else more major for now. I was also told I have "excellent ovarian reserve".... so if things DO take a while still, at least I don't have to worry about running out of eggs just yet

The plan is Metformin + Clomid for the next three cycles, and if I'm not pregnant by then, we'll have another meeting to re-check things and make a new plan of action.

Any other PCOS-ers and/or Metformin-takers on this thread?

@alie- I got diagnosed with mild, "thin", PCOS yesterday. The RE said I had a lot of eggs in there just waiting to come out. I'm starting tomorrow night. It's the most excited I've been in awhile to start trying again.

    kiwi / 526 posts

@TheReelDeal: Ooh, how I wish I was the "thin" version, ha! I'm actually not *that* overweight, but I am by no means thin. Are you starting Metformin+Clomid as well, or something different?

  10. TheReelDeal

    kiwi / 742 posts

@alie-Haha! I'm just doing Clomid and I'm going to keep taking Pregitude, the RE laughed when I showed to her, but she did say it was fine for me to keep taking. She doesn't think I have insulin resistance, though.

  11. fairefaire

@TheReelDeal: Ah, that makes sense... the Metformin is just for the insulin resistance. Fingers crossed that Clomid works for you!!

@alie: @ladybee recently got diagnosed with PCOS too. She's just on clomid this cycle. Great that you can hopefully take some meds and get pregnant without IUI.

I had to post something that really made my day today! My DH goes in for his second SA today or tomorrow (per OB orders) but I had gone to the local RE's office website and found they had a location where you could email questions. I wrote out our story (briefly) and asked about referrals, etc. One of their doctors wrote me back in about a day and a half and she said a) it's unlikely DH is the problem and b) they can get us in in about 2 weeks - all I have to do is call and make the appointment. This is what DH's urologist has been saying all along and I'm so excited that if we're not pregnant this time we can go see someone who knows what they're doing and finally find out what's wrong with me! My OB won't test me because she thinks DH is the issue. So for most people that's probably not exciting but I am so happy to be about to move toward getting fixed and having a baby vs sitting around and waiting for my small town doc to do something about it!

@alie: Sounds like you have been getting a lot of information over the past week. Hooray for "excellent ovarian reserve"! I hope that the metformin takes care of things and you can move on to achieve your BFP soon.

@justdarling & @Leialou: still thinking lots of positive thoughts for you two

@BabyBunny: Thanks for posting your success story. I know all of us on this thread hope we have one of our own very soon.

@mrsmate: I hope your appointment goes well today and you are able to move on to IVF soon.

@MK0180: Glad your appointment went well. Starting clomid + IUI so soon!! Good luck to you

@kentuckygirl: Glad to hear the femara is working for you!

@raintreebee: Thinking of you. Definitely let the optimism creep in to your thoughts - you never know I'm trying to let myself have this month to hope for a BFP after my surgery. Focusing on the positive (but it really is SO hard!).

@Mrs.Someone: SO so so so happy for you! Congrats!

@marionberry: That's GREAT news! Yay for finding an enthusiastic doctor AND for there to be an opening in the next 2 weeks!

Well, its not looking good for me After a very low HCG on Tuesday, I'm now spotting. I'm scheduled for another test tomorrow, but I'm going to take a HPT soon to see if there is anything still there. I've had a very rough last 2 days, but oddly today I'm doing OK. Maybe its because I'm approaching an answer...

@marionberry - Glad to hear that something is going well! I'd say get a different doctor if you have the option. And to answer your question from a few days ago, my acupuncturist makes a special herb blend for me, I don't know whats in it though. It did at least get me pregnant quickly, even if it may not be sticking this time. Thats at least a step in the right direction...

@mrs.someone: I'm so sorry that this lo may not be sticking. But you're right, it is a step in the right direction. ali had a miscarriage days after her bfp and 2 cycles later has a sticky baby. Hugs! I did some reading about Chinese herbs last night and if my RE can't fix me, an acupuncturist is next lol.

@Mrs.Someone: I'm so sorry to hear. I went through the exact same thing last month and it's really heartbreaking to have what you want so much, just to lose it shortly after.

AFM, I'm really frustrated at the moment. I took 100mg of Clomid this cycle - did 50 then 100 when that didn't work last cycle. I had an ultrasound and b/w yesterday and I have no follicles above 10mm. IDK why the 100 didn't work this time, maybe because I'd taken 50 previously so it was still in my system? Maybe it wasn't enough time? I kinda feel my ovaries today and didn't before this month, so maybe it'll still happen.

If not, they'll bump me to 150mg, and then it'll be another week + before I ovulate. This process is so frustrating and grueling.

Yep, its definitely over, BFN. I'm doing OK though. Trying to remind myself that this is a step in the right direction and that I am able to get pregnant.

@alie: I'm on Metformin and I also have an extremely sensitive stomach. Take the Metformin after you eat dinner. I haven't had any of the bad side effects at all. My doctors was very insistant that you have to eat a big meal and then take the Met.

    @marionberry: That is great news!

@sweetooth: Thanks for the positive thoughts. This TWW is killing me. I am trying not to sympton spot, but it is so hard!

@Mrs.Someone: I'm so sorry. This is so disappointing.

  24. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

@alie: Hopefully the Metformin and Clomid do the trick! That's great that you don't have to do IUI and even better about the ovarian reserve.

@marionberry: Finally a doctor who has some sense! I am really hoping you can get in to see this RE soon because that OB of yours was not making sense at all. I know it isn't exciting to hear that you may be the obstacle (and I'm not trying to celebrate that here) but she seemed to be holding things up with her backwards ideas.

@Mrs.Someone: I am so so sorry...

@MrsCB: That must be so frustrating! You don't even need this right now, on top of what you've gone through recently.

@sweetooth: How are things feeling after the surgery?

@Kentuckygirl: Hope you ended up seeing that +OPK!

    @justdarling: @raintreebee: @leialou: Thinking of you guys!

Sorry I haven't had much to say lately...I just feel really mixed up inside with the RE appt next week and not having a clue what we're doing and when we start. We could be starting IVF in a few weeks or in 2 months, and/or we could do IUI before that, or not (hopefully not though). I've been trying to take care of so many things around the home that I might not be able to get to once that starts.

  25. sweetooth

    nectarine / 2705 posts

@spaniellove: Could you really be starting IVF in two weeks? I can see why you feel mixed up. Starting IUI or IVF is a big step. I think you're smart to think through it and take care of things around the house while you're feeling well and able. I'm trying to get another room in our house painted before we start the IUI process. Until then...even though I promised myself I wouldn't, I'm giving it ONE more shot without any assistance and hoping that the surgery was all I needed to get my BFP. I'm feeling just fine after it - thanks for asking I had to take a week off and heal. And now we're going at it like rabbits! If we do this much BD and we don't get preggers - then I definitely, DEFINITELY need some medical assistance. (funny how having one more shot makes me feel like I can do this one my own again...I'm right back where I was in August...)

  26. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

@sweetooth: Probably 4 weeks. A while back I made a long list of all kinds of things that needed to be taken care of, so I could deep clean the home in steps. You know how some things you can do once and not have to do again for months Having that burst of energy and optimism is great! You might as well give it everything you've got, right?

  27. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

@spaniellove: I called this morning and they got me in next week! I've had to fill out a ton of paperwork that I'll send back tomorrow but I'm SUPER excited. I couldn't believe that just the consultation costs $350 though. My insurance won't cover it and so I'm just wondering what it's going to cost us before we even get to IUI or IVF...assuming somewhere between $1k-$2k. Better start saving more! And I agree with you...so happy to get away from the dumb OB.
@mrs.someone: I may do that! Gonna see what the RE says and go from there.
@justdarling: Yes it is! Loving it!

@Mrs.Someone: I'm sorry, I know how terrible that feels.

Update on me - we met RE today. DH semen analysis was normal. My bloodwork from spring was normal, doc ordered a few more tests. Having tubogram with next cycle. (Anyone have any advice on it? RE made it sound like no big deal.)

I was worried RE would want us to go slow, but she brought up IUI and IVF before we did! She said she would be surprised if the testing we're doing will show any problems with me. We will most likely be one of those unexplained IF couples. We should be starting IUI or IVF (we're leaning IVF) with injectables in 1-2mo. Hallelujah!

@Mrs.Someone: I am so sorry. When we were in the process of mc our little one the waiting and waiting for more tests and more blood work was horrible. I found myself prepared for the mc way before the final blood work confirmed but it still hurt and I was still miserable for a long time. I know having an answer is better than sitting and waiting and I hope that you'll be pregnant again soon!

AFM, temp spike this morning but I've already had a random one day temp spike so I want to wait to see how tomorrow goes before getting my hopes up. Today is CD 17 so if I O'd yesterday that would be fabulous. However, I'm worried that we only BD EOD and yesterday was not our day. I hope that doesn't mean we are out. My doctor wouldn't tell me EOD if it didn't work, right?

@spaniellove: I so get it! I have a list of home projects you can't do pregnant and every time AF shows I do a project. I also go tanning and drink a lot lol

@marionberry: Eeeek! I will be sending you an email!

@alie: I was diagnosed with what I think is a mild case of PCOS. My signs were ovarian cysts, wonky cycles, random stray hairs, and horrible cycstic acne. My doctor only put me on clomid. He did suggest losing a few pounds but I'm 5'4" and was 145 pounds (I've lost 5 since meeting with him) so I don't think I'm IR. The biggest clue for him was my FSH and LH levels. He said one shouldn't be more than half of the other. I think it was LH shouldn't be more than half of FSH. My FSH was a 5.9 and my LH was a 18. That with the wonky, long cycles, indicated a problem for him. I hope that makes sense? I'm on 50mg of clomid and you hear a lot of people say 50mg didn't work for them. I'm still hoping it makes me O and a temp spike this morning says it might have! We will see.

  31. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

@marionberry: Yay! They got you in! That is a lot of money but it seems like par for the course from what I've seen. Just going through my billing for the last few months, other than that fee it looks like they billed $200 for the u/s, $560 for the HSG, and they aren't showing the bloodwork yet. It's worth it though!

@ladybee: I hope this is O and the Clomid worked! My big thing about "tasks I won't do on IVF or when pregnant" is the vacuum. I hate lugging the Dyson up stairs! I'll vacuum a lot before we start this and then we're getting a new one that's lighter and isn't broken!

@marionberry: Don't know if this is even relevant info for you, but DH figured out that our insurance was billed about $2000 for the genetic testing, which was totally different from the cost we were told. Granted, ours was much more extensive than what people usually get for Tay-Sachs or CF.

  34. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

@spaniellove: Thanks this info is super helpful! We actually talked about the genetic testing yesterday and had decided to do it, but for $2000 I'm not so sure. I put on the form, yes, but contingent on price and doctor recommendation. We're basically estimating at least $1500-$2000 for the diagnosis stage. Then hopefully it's just IUI because that's pretty cheap. On their website my RE quotes $300 (if it's just simple IUI) or up to $750 if monitored with ultrasound and with injectibles. IVF would def take a family loan I think.

  35. Mrs.Someone

    pomelo / 5228 posts

Since we're both Jewish, we were suggested to get genetic testing too. But the blood tests were so pricey! So instead we did DNA testing from 23andme.com (it was $99/each at the time though). It gives a lot of cool information on top of letting you know if you're a carrier for most major diseases.

  36. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

@marionberry: @Mrs.Someone: I got a VM from the RE today. Not the office, the actual doctor. Considering how hard it is to get anyone on the phone there, my heart sank when I heard him on the phone telling me he needed me to call him back about the genetic testing. He actually got on the phone with me right away, and told me DH is a carrier for Canavan disease...he didn't even know I was tested because he didn't have my results. But he guessed I wasn't a carrier since I'm not Jewish. We are so glad we did the testing because even if we're not both carriers this helps guide our decision-making. And BTW, the website for the test (Counsyl) says most insurers cover it with a max out-of-pocket of $99. It was so worth it.

It was a short phone call, but I also mentioned that we were leaning towards IVF. He said the only question was our insurance coverage and I said we know they don't cover IVF at all. So he said then that makes it easy because otherwise we would have had to meet some criteria for the insurance company but now we can just go ahead with the IVF, and we'll talk about it more at our appointment Wednesday. So it's decided I guess!

  37. Mrs.Someone

    pomelo / 5228 posts

@spaniellove - Good to hear that you got it done! Is knowing about the Canavan disease going to affect you? I thought those things were fine as long as only one person has it.

My doc recommended Counsyl too, but it was at least $300 out of pocket for just me, so we passed.

  38. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

@mrs.someone and @spaniellove: this is such great information. Counsyl is what was mentioned to us as well, so it's good to know your out of pocket expense to do it. I'm going to look into that website mrs.someone mentioned as well.
@spaniellove: I read that these issues can be prevented once you find out you're a carrier. Is there some special testing they'll do on the embryo before IVF to test if it carries the disease?

  39. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

@marionberry: Yes, you can have PGD done to test and select only certain embryos. It's kind of costly but at this point we're leaning towards maybe doing it especially since we'll also be doing ICSI which means they won't have any clue if they're choosing good sperm.

@Mrs.Someone: You're right that it is one of those things where you need both parents to be carriers to have the disease. But since it's a condition that affects motor skills, cognitive skills, and developmental milestones and causes seizures and we already know autism and seizures may be an issue for our child, we don't want to take any chances.

  40. ladybee

I am sitting at CD 19 and have not O'd. On clomid you are suppose to O 5-10 days after your last pill. Today would be 10 days after. Juding by my temps, darkening line on OPK and EWCM I think I geared up to O and failed again. The next day my OPK was stark white. I guess 50mg wasn't the trick for me. I'm going to call my doctor in a day or two and see if I can up to 100mg even thought I'm 99% sure he doesn't prescibe it that high. I kinda feel like I'm out of the game until probably end of Jan, beginning of Feb since I don't meet with my RE until the beginning of Jan. I hope my fears don't come true, but I'm nervous that I'll start my period the week before going so I'll have to wait another cycle to even do blood work. This is so frustrating and I feel so down lately. We are going to continue BDing every other day until I get a temp spike, I don't care if it takes till NYE. I want some chance this cycle!
