I'm researching this now, and wondering about costs. They seem to vary a lot for DIY kits vs working with a professional installer. Was wondering if anyone has experience with either option, and how it went for you?

@mrbee: do you mean tinting? We had our windows done at both our houses (past/current) and hired a company both times. It looks complicated and I am glad we did not do it ourselves. It makes a big difference in terms of how much heat/sun comes in!

@MamaCate: Sometimes tinting can come with UV protection too! I'm curious about all window films, but mostly the ones with UV protection.
Do you remember how much it was to install the film on the windows?

@mrbee: I don't know if we got uv tinting or not. But for 3 sliding glass doors it was around $475.
We got solar screens on the other west facing windows.

My parents tinted the entire front of the house (windows and doors) which faces the morning sun. I don't remember cost, but made a big difference on their AC bill!

@mrbee: do you want permanent or temporary?
Actually I guess this could be permanent but we use it as a temporary cover for the hot summer sun - in the winter we remove it so we can get more sun.
We cover the skylight in the master bedroom and the upper windows that face the backyard and get PM sun - makes a world of difference!!
