@mrsjazz: hah yeah....when your "corner store" is Dean & Deluca it's crunchy!
grapefruit / 4291 posts
I don't necessarily think HB is "crunchy" as such, more diverse in its opinions and community I guess!
And I also think "crunch" is relative to each different member, one woman's granola is another woman's cornflakes!
bananas / 9357 posts
I don't think HB is super crunchy. I'm crunchier than most people I know IRL and I attribute a lot of that to HB.

@Mrs. Train: i'm so glad you reconsidered! you are my superhero! i am in awe of you and love your honesty about things like TV & takeout. thank you for finding time to blog & share with us, i appreciate it =)
blogger / pomegranate / 3300 posts
@Mrs. Bee: thanks. That makes me feel better. Sometimes I just need a few minutes to make lunch the tv seems to work.
@honeybee @mrs. Bird that means a lot to me thanks.

I think I am a little more crunchy than the site but probably not by a ton. I agree with some thoughts others have pointed out, on a board like this people are probably looking for support for decisions that aren't as common in your community (even just tiny things) and my feeling is that the users here are pretty well educated and researched so they naturally will be exposed to more thoughts on child rearing and will try lots of things out and see what sticks. I have friends that aren't big researchers and just go with their gut or what there mom did which totally works but you can't try an ergo or blw if you have never heard of it.
grapefruit / 4049 posts
the boards seem to have a balance of crunchy and not-so-crunchy mamas, and all those who are in between (including many moms who are crunchy, but don't consider themselves crunchy... haha).
but i'd say the blog is less crunchy... the gear posts, fancy birthday parties, and mini style posts seem to balance all that out.
blogger / pomelo / 5400 posts
Hmmm, I feel like there's a good balance. But maybe I'm just biased, since I think I'm pretty middle of the road.

@Mrs. Train: oh you're nuts!! I only have 2 little ones and we live off takeout almost all week long. Uh ok it might have been that way when we just had 1. Or even before having the 1. Sigh. I need to cook more.
I'm not crunchy at all!! I think the crunchiest thing I do is buy organic baby food. And that's one crunchy step down from making your own baby food too. I guess I was crunchier as a SAHM since I exclusively breast fed? And I often have hairy legs but that's not crunchiness.. that's laziness...
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
Hmmm, as a Mainer who belongs to an ultra-crunchy FB group, I'd say HB is not crunchy.
I'd classify HB as a more educated bunch whether that be formally educated or self-educated. But in general I get the feeling that it's a group who are focused on learning more and dong the best they can do for themselves and their families.
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
@Monkula: having grown up around true 70's crunchy, I agree that HB leans toward trendy-crunchy, which in my mind I'm calling "more educated." By that I mean people have learned about the benefits of baby wearing, breastfeeding and eating organic, local produce so they adopt those practices. Not the lifestyle crunchy like communal living, not owning razors and living off the land crunchy that I'm used it
honeydew / 7589 posts
@Mrs. Stroller: ""more educated." By that I mean people have learned about the benefits of baby wearing, breastfeeding and eating organic, local produce so they adopt those practices."
Exactly. I don't think people here are adopting crunchy practices because they want to be trendy/cool/in vogue, but because they have become interested in the benefits by seeing it around them, and have chosen to emulate the ideas they find useful for their own family.
bananas / 9628 posts
@Mrs. Stroller: haha, DH & i have discussed how we love the idea of communal living & given the land, would love to farm =D i think i have a crunchy heart, but lack the drive to find crunchy local resources =D
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
@photojane: agreed! Around here it is about 50/50 on breastfeeding.
I tried but decided it wasn't the best for me and my baby and switched. I am not crunchy at all doing formula, stroller, CIO, hospital with epi and ending up in c-section.
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
@mrs. bird: I grew up on a farm and can't wait to go back, but DH is very vocal that he does not want to live off the land like my parents do. He says just watching my dad exhausts him! I think I've got an uphill battle on my hands

From a perspective of someone without a LO yet - I think HB is definitely making me want to be crunchier if that makes sense when it comes to baby related things in the future. Minus cloth diapering - I just don't think I can do that, but other than that I want to do all these crunchy things for my future baby!

I don't find HB to be crunchy at all. I find it to be the complete opposite.
I go to other sites and FB groups for "crunchy support."
blogger / pomegranate / 3300 posts
@mrs. wagon: haha. That's how I felt. I think I want to be more crunchy its just so hard to form new habits. Take out was my hardest thing to overcome.
bananas / 9118 posts
I think HB has a great balance, you are exposed to and educated on so many options that you can choose what works best for you and bond with others in similar situations.
grapefruit / 4800 posts
@lemondrop: I'd agree with that. It's got a bit of everything.
When I first joined I thought there was going to be little crunchy perspective but then was pleasantly surprised.

I think HB has made me consider being more crunchy! I think our family is probably a little more crunchy than the average American one and HB probably contributed to that with ideas of things to try.
pomelo / 5628 posts
I guess I think HB is a little crunchy, but still very diverse. I live in SoCal and my SIL is about as crunchy as you can get so I'm never surprised by anything and I've seen all of it before.
I try to be as healthy and environmentally conscious as I can easily do. I would not feel comfortable giving birth outside of a hospital, I use disposables (but have done research on environmental impact and have found that CD is not much different because of the energy or washing/ water/ soap etc.), I love baby wearing but use a stroller too, I try to avoid toxic products, I want to give exclusive breast milk but can't right now...still trying.

I've always felt moderately crunchy IRL but definitely not even the average crunchiness of the average bee. DH doesn't think I'm crunchy at all . But judging from how most people are responding, it seems there are more "less than average crunchies" than it seems?
grapefruit / 4712 posts
I would consider HB to be cruncher then me. I don't consider myself crunchy at all. I do however prefer my food to be more natural and I try to live a more holistic lifestyle.
GOLD / pear / 1845 posts
I think we just have a diverse mix of crunchiness. That said, I'm pretty sure I'm crunchier than HB which is funny because I live in suuuuch a crunchy part of the country and am not at all compared to many people here.
pineapple / 12526 posts
@mrbee: Haha, not necessarily. I'm doing doula training this summer and I'm not crunchy at all!
HB is way crunchier than I am.
nectarine / 2631 posts
Way crunchier than me- but i have learned alot on here- and will def. try to impliment some of these things in my families life.
pomelo / 5041 posts
I had never heard the word "crunchy" to describe a person until this post. That said, I am not very crunchy at all.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
I can't believe I missed this post! Hilarious! lol!!
I'm much crunchier than most of the people I know personally, but less crunchy than an average HBer. I think there is a good balance here, and I'm glad to have the opportunity to learn all that I have from here.
