stupid question... when i feel baby move i cannot help but to poke her/push on my stomach... i wanna see if i can feel what body part it is and see if she'll react to my hands... but a lady at work just yelled at me and told me not to do that! is it bad???? i can't think of why it would be, i feel like she's pretty protected in there. is this a completely stupid question?

I did it all the time - I loved feeling them move inside!!
eta: When I 1st read this I thought "who in the heck pokes their baby????" Then I realized you were pregnant

I remember wondering the same thing and everything I read said that they are so protected in there, we can't hurt them by poking or pushing back. Within reason of course

I think it's fine! I poked LO all the time. Especially towards the end when I would get nervous if she hadn't moved in a bit. I'd poke her to make her squirm to make sure she was okay. I asked my midwives if that was okay (and if movement counted if I'd poked her to provoke it lol) and they said it was fine.

When my daughter would do what felt like tap on my belly, I always tapped back. She would often respond!

I do it all the time, too. DH thinks i shouldnt ("don't poke baby!") but the ultrasound tech did it at all my ultrasounds, too, so i figure it can't be bad!
And I can tell when she sticks her butt out because it's in a certain spot (confirmed by ultrasounds) and when she stretches her legs her feet go waaaaaay over to my side (almost around my back) and i always rub her little feet and she moves them around while i'm rubbing them. It's cute

I really feel like these people at your job are ridiculous. I did/do it all the time. If I want her to move for DH I push on her all the time lol

I smiled when I saw this thread because I was wondering the same thing!! I do it all the time, and DH does it too -- so so so cute to see him interacting with the little guy. True, the ultrasound techs do it all the time to get the baby to move, so yeah, I can't imagine it's that bad for the baby!

@dc yoga bee: i'm kind of obsessed with it! I already think she's adorable and i haven't even seen her! This morning she was sleeping until i ate breakfast and as soon as i ate she stretched way out and i rubbed her feet - it was like she was groggy and waking up and stretching while saying good morning. It's amazing to kind of know what she's up to before she's even born!

thanks guys, i feel better! i really just wanna know what body parts i'm feeling. i often feel her on complete opposite sides of my belly and i feel like she's stretching out and it's her feet/hands. and right now i feel like her bum/back are up high but i can't be sure. and i love when i push her and she pushes back haha. so glad i'm not the only one. and ya the ultrasound techs get pretty rough, especially at the anatomy scan!

one time my husband was laying next to my big belly and the baby must not have liked it because he kicked him hard in the head haha -
This thread made me laugh. Just this morning I was saying to DH that, after reading about exactly what goes on when they do an ECV, I officially no longer feel bad about the poking I'm doing to the baby. If baby can handle being forcibly yanked around, I am sure my poking her to feel which body part is where is fine.
And I'm also feeling a lot of jabbing on both sides of my stomach at once, making me feel like she's stretching out. My midwife said she's already head-down so I'm not sure how she's accomplishing that.

I hope it's not bad, because when we had our elective 3D ultrasound, the tech poked my belly SO hard trying to get LO to wake up!

With this pregnancy and LO's, I always did especially if they're moving in a funny position. When LO was almost due, I would poke his butt because it was always up on my left side.

Oh gosh I have wondered this too...baby girl has her head up so high that sometimes it feels like she is bruising my ribs. I have to push her down a bit just so I can breathe sometimes! Poor girl.

@namaste: I remember when I was pregnant with LO. A few times when I was 30 weeks plus, two ob's felt around my belly to the point where they could feel how much LO weighed by doing that or locate his heartbeat. It looked funny, but was effective.

I loved feeling how they kick back. My first would kick me twice when I poked her then press her foot against my belly and I'd rub her little foot. She had the same little kick pattern when she was born too.

Totally fine. My pregnancy app even said how it is a fun game for mom and baby to play. There is so much cushion there.

I do this all the time!!! I'm obsessed with trying to figure out what body part is where. I really wish bellies came with windows so I wouldn't be guessing, and I would I just know. Then he moves and I'm guessing all over again. DH is even into the game. My doc confirms via pressing and poking that he's still head down at every appt so it can't be bad at all.

My toddler is constantly kicking and headbutting baby and my OB says no worries. It would take a very hard blow to hurt the baby.
