    @MrsYellowJacket: I'm really sorry. What a crappy way to treat a longtime employee. They sound like an awful government agency to work for. I hope your relative is able to keep / obtain insurance, heal, and find a new position with a better employer.

    I really appreciate the advice, kind words, and support. I hope we can find insurance as well so we can continue the healing process.

    @MrsYellowJacket: would coverage through an exchange be an option? It may be cheaper than COBRA coverage.
