I will add a poll in this, I'm just curious!
I'm going to say no! I wish it was though! But we plan on having it paid off in 10-11 years. Although we probably won't live there for that long...

No. We just bought it a year ago. One day! We had no debt before we purchased and it was a glorious feeling.

no, we just refinanced our fixed 30 year to a fixed 15 year though excited!

Nope... we just bought two years ago. And only plan to be in this house another 3-5 years.

Ours was temporarily but with interest rates so low we took out a mortgage and reinvested the money.

Nope! But when we bought it 1 and a half yrs ago we mortgaged it over 35 years. Since then we've brought that down to 25 and are doing lump sum payments each year to bring it down even more! I want to be debt free!!

@Maysprout: That's awesome! I would really love to learn more about investing money

Nope! We refinanced our 30 year loan a couple years ago to a 20 year loan, so we're closer, but yet still so far!

hahahaha no. We just bought in '09 so we're still pretty early in our 30 loan.

We just bought a year ago so we aren't even close. We are hoping that in 3 years our so it will make sense to refinance to a 15 year mortgage.

We're about to close on a home and our current condo is not paid off so we will have 2 mortgages until/unless we sell the condo. In places where you can buy a home for like $150k I could see having our home paid off...but unfortunately, that's not the case where we live!

@yoursilverlining: Oh man, My house was only 77k and I still feel like we will never pay ours off!
grapefruit / 4703 posts
No way! Our mortgage is like, 4x @MrsBrewer's, and it's not our forever house, so I don't expect to pay it off until we sell the house. Sigh - why is housing so expensive around here?!
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@yoursilverlining: Nope, because if you could buy houses for $150k the chances of you making the amount of money you guys do is a lootttt less likely!
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
I said only a few years because No Way is a bit off for me. It's 11 years away from being paid off. That is so not far off at all!!!
eggplant / 11824 posts
@MrsTiz: I guess it depends. If I was willing to commute 45 minutes each way, I could buy a home for $150k where I live; and still make the same salary I do now.
ETA: Also, even if you only paid $100/month extra towards your mortgage, obv it would be paid off much faster on something 100k than 400k
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@yoursilverlining: true! I just know that I bought a 105k foreclosure and couldn't pay more than what we do now, which is just one payment a month lol wah this post makes me feel poor
eggplant / 11824 posts
@MrsTiz: hey, the fact that you make your mortgage payment is what counts! Anything extra is just gravy
here's a handy site for showing what difference extra payments make to a mortgage; even little ones. I like to plug in numbers and pretend my house will be paid off soon! haha

I hate reading threads on here in general about home prices. I decided to stop clicking on them when someone said they bought a HOUSE in Florida for $60K. Sad face.
That being said: no. We need to move in a few years anyway as we live in a crappy school district (new report just came out that puts us in bottom 20% of the state...) which we knew, but houses in good public school districts around here start around $650K for 2000 sq feet. Sad face again. We will be paying a mortgage until we retire.

@JoJoGirl: ugh. so true. paying off a house is not even something I ever expect to do. If we could afford to pay more we'd be living in a better town (with a bigger mortgage)
@MrsTiz: don't feel poor! Aren't you super young? You should be proud that you own a house - I know I wouldn't have been able to afford one 8-10 years ago
pomegranate / 3809 posts
Not even close. We'll be happy to pay it off in 20 years with the extra principle payments we're making.

@MrsTiz: Don't feel poor! My husband and I just bought a house for 77k!! and we're just making ends meet!
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@Shutterbug: Yeah, 19
@MrsBrewer: Woah, 77k! are houses in your area inexpensive or did you get an amazing deal?
coconut / 8854 posts
@MrsTiz: Ummm both! I mean you can buy a really nice house with about an acre of land for around 175-200k and the house that we bought 2 years ago was assessed at 150k, and then the market brought it down to 123k last year. We just got it assessed this year (for taxes) and it's still at 123k though! The woman we bought it from was just in a bad situation and wanted to sell the house as fast as possible, that's why it was listed so low, so we just got really lucky!

Nope! We don't have one yet..can't wait to go into debt!
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
No! And by next summer, we'll have TWO MORTGAGES- FREAK ME OUT TO DEATH!
We're building a house in South Carolina and keeping our Florida house to rent out. I wish we would just sell it, but DH wants to hang onto it! Two mortgages scares me to death but he says "That's how real estate works." I'm definitely no Donald Trump!!! I just want one house:) I like safety!
ETA: Wow! Some of you must live in areas where housing is way more affordable! We got a GREAT deal on our house in Fort Lauderdale, but still not in the "pay it off asap" range....And the house we're building in SC- you just don't even want to know! I never thought I'd see such numbers and we'd be like "Okay! This is what we're going to do!" So that one definitely won't be paid off very early!!!

@JoJoGirl: I feel the same, it is depressing seeing 60k houses while I am about to pay 800k for. 900 sq ft condo. NY is just so expensive. Plus as govt employees we are definitely not making the huge salaries that people assume come with the territory.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
@plantains: WOW! My heart goes out to you!!!! I grew up in a place where houses cost very little - my parents 4 BR house on 2 acres of land cost them $40K! Granted that was 15 years ago, but still....We are building a house in the $550K range and I have panic attacks every day thinking about it...I never thought I'd be someone who built a half a million dollar house and it freaks me the hell out! I can only imagine how scary it must be for you with $800K!!!!

@plantains: Goodness!

thats what 800k gets you in my town makes no sense, does it?

@PrincessBaby: 2 mortgages is a really frightening proposition when one of them is for half a mil! Totally worth it though to get the home of your dreams.
@MrsTiz: Wow!!!!!! I really need to move. That is absolutely incredible.
