He hates it. He will run and hide in the other room, or if DH is home he clings to him. I can't even hold him while I vacuum! Thankfully we only have 2 small rugs that need it, the rest of the floor is hardwood.

she doesn't mind the handheld because i use it to "get" her. but if she hears it and doesn't see it, she gets a little crazy.

Usually do when she is napping. One time she was in a box playing with her stuffed animals so I did the living room rug and she looked at for 30 secs and then cried until I turned it off.
