@madisonbee: Agh that is how I felt with my last period. Luckily that stage only lasted about 36 hours. So annoying nonetheless!

Okay so I went for acupuncture yesterday afternoon. She put about a dozen needles in me, in the top of my head, between my eyes, abdomen, legs and feet. It hurt a little bit, some worse than others. Between my eyes, lower abdomen and Achilles tendon hurt the worst.

She said I should try to come back next week - to basically do it once a week during the first two weeks of my cycle. Which is a lot of money! $58/visit is $116/cycle. Ouch. Then I have to get blood draws & ultrasounds each month while using Clomid, which are not covered after "diagnosis" (unexplained infertility, lovely diagnosis!). So all of this is going to be pretty pricey each cycle. I haven't done the math but it's going to be hundreds of dollars. Luckily I have a bunch of money socked away in an HSA, but it still sucks to spend this much.

On a lighter and unrelated note, I've thrown myself into making a fun and complicated birthday cake for my husband. I asked him what kind of cake he wanted and he said "surprise me" so of course I went nuts and spent hours researching fun cake ideas.

I decided to do an ombre cake in his favorite color, blue. Then I'm going to cover the whole thing in different types of blue sprinkles. Here are some pics to give you an idea of how it should turn out, though I'm sure mine will look much more "homemade." I love to cook but I rarely bake because I feel like it's much more of a crapshoot and also it feels like more dishes to wash afterwards.

His birthday isn't until next Saturday, and this cake is for a party we're having for him on Friday. But he is out at a bar watching the Steelers vs. Dolphins game right now (we live in Pittsburgh) so it's a good time to get this baking done without him getting some idea of what his "surprise" cake is going to look like. Plus I read that it's easier to cut the dome off a cake when it's frozen. I told him "no poking around in the freezer!"

I just have to say - I clearly need children if I am putting this much thought and effort into an adult's birthday cake. LOL!

@bizwitch: Good luck with the complicated cake. I love to bake but I've never done an ombre cake. My husband's standing birthday cake is a chocolate Guinness cake with Bailey's cream cheese frosting.

@snarkybiochemist: Going off the bcp wreaked havoc on my digestive system - I was getting stomach aches every day - but I found that probiotics made a HUGE difference. I drink kefir a couple of times a week and haven't had any issues at all since incorporating probiotics into my diet. Not sure if this might be worth trying if the hormones are wreaking havoc with digestion, if you aren't already...

@bizwitch: Wow, that's an awesome cake! Your husband is super lucky! I found a community acupuncture place - everyone sits in recliners in one room so they will only put needles in areas that can be publicly exposed - below the elbows, below the knee, and head. I get a pack of five visits though for $80. Not sure if this is a common thing or if I just got really lucky that there was a place like this nearby.

@periwinklebee: I eat Greek yogurt with live cultures in it most days and it helps, but I can't take a probiotic too many days in a row or I deal with inflammation on the outside of my colon. My body as a general rule does not handle hormones well. I am very nervous about morning sickness bc of this.

@bizwitch: Ooh that acupuncture sounds intense! And those cakes look delish! You'll have to show us how it turns out. The ombre picture is just too perfect, mine would never look like that!

@azjax: sounds fascinating! I considered applying for a nursing position at my hospital's infectious disease department. Maybe in the future! Good luck with it!

@bizwitch: damn, that's a beautiful cake! Looks much more complicated than I'd attempt! You'll have to post a picture of yours when you finish.

I'm sorry about how expensive TTC is becoming for you. It's easy to say "it will be worth it!", but that doesn't make it any easier to empty your wallet all the time. I truly hope the combo works for you!

@knittylady: this probably sounds ridiculous to some the people on the board but our timing dtd has been super off this week when it needs to be on schedule! It's so tough to get it right. Like I am pretty sure yesterday should have been a priority day, but then our 2 yo woke up and was just inconsolable for almost 2 hours and I never got out of his room for the rest of the night. Not as unusual as it sounds, I am in there almost ever night from around 3 on, but it was like 11 pm :(. Then today we were just about to and he woke up from nap. And not to be tmi, but I am pretty sure my husband finished off for himself and I wanted to shout hey! Save that for bedtime! Sigh.

So this happened yesterday... and I'm now quietly freaking myself out at the thought of actually having a third baby. I'm not even sure what made me want to test and I certainly wasn't expecting to see two lines. With my first two babies I knew I was pregnant before I even tested, with this one my only symptom is being tired and having slightly sore boobs. So many mixed emotions and thoughts right now.

@Kemma: congrats! I'm sure there's no such thing as uncomplicated feelings when you get pregnant with a third

@junebugsmama: it's so hard to time bd without kids, so throwing them in the mix is crazy making! We managed to bd (for O+1) last night like minutes before our youngest ended up in bed with us with a terrible cough... then around 3 our oldest called out for me to lay with him because of HIS cough. Oof.

@Mrs. K: um, I certainly have not googled 1 DPO symptoms. whyever would someone think that? Nope. Not me.

I think I'm going to call my doctor today and ask for progesterone. Do you start taking it after you ovulate? I think that's what she told me but I can't remember!
CD 3 here and ready to get this show on the road...

  23. snarkybiochemist

    nectarine / 2180 posts

@mrskansas: I typically start 2 days after I ovulate. Since I trigger its pretty exact for me but if you are temping you should be able to have a good idea as well. I continue to take it until a blood pregnancy test and then my doctor will have me continue for 10-12 weeks if I am pregnant.

@Kemma: congrats!!! Gotta say, we have an especially special place in our hearts for our third. My hubby's cousin wasn't planning on her third, didn't want him. But now, is her fav ;)... congrats!!!!!

  25. mrskansas

    nectarine / 2813 posts

@snarkybiochemist: I don't temp so do you think OPKs would be enough to confirm? Maybe wait like 4 days after the positive?
I'll definitely ask my doctor to confirm though.

@mrskansas: I'm not sure on that one, I'm sure when they prescribe it they will give you information on when to take it. It also might vary based on type, I am using vaginal suppositories not pills.

@bizwitch: You might check with your doctor to see if they can code any of your diagnostic tests as "ovarian dysfunction"

My insurance doesn't cover any infertility treatments, but because my doctor is treating the underlying issues (one being ovarian dysfunction), so far, most everything has been covered.

I'm not sure about all the ultrasounds, but the blood tests most likely would be. I did a full month long panel and didn't pay out of pocket for any of it (and am still doing 0+7 monthly)

  32. periwinklebee

@knittylady: Thank you for asking! I couldn't POAS this morning b/c I still hadn't gotten home yet and didn't have any more tests. But I POAS when I got home this afternoon, after a long hold. I was so nervous about it because when I wiped this morning, I noticed the TP was tinged a bit pink, and the pinching and other symptoms I've had the past couple of days have let way up.

I don't really know what to make of it. The FRER (at 14dpo) looked almost identical to my original BFP (at 11dpo). I let it dry for awhile and same. I wasn't going to take a cheapie, because I've heard they suck at getting dark, but when the FRER wasn't looking promising I went ahead and used a cheapie anyways, and the cheapie on the other hand is much, much darker than three days ago. It was a super, super squinter at 11dpo, and now is as dark or darker than the FRER. IDK, based on the FRER I still don't have a great feeling. I'm going to call in the morning and see if I can get betas b/c staring at pee sticks is for the birds.

  33. knittylady

    pomegranate / 3212 posts

@periwinklebee: I'll say that looking at lines isn't a reliable way to judge blah blah blah but I do the same thing, and you're right it's for the birds! Hope they can get you in soon for peace of mind

  34. Mrs. Oreo

    pear / 1677 posts

@Kemma: My, what beautiful pink lines you have! CONGRATULATIONS!!! How exciting!

@periwinklebee: Yay! I've heard that about cheapies too, so I'm glad it's getting darker for you. Keep us posted on those betas!

AF finally came full force today. Yahoooo!

  35. snarkybiochemist

    nectarine / 2180 posts

@periwinklebee: It sounds like blood tests and checking for a doubling beta would be very reassuring rather then trying to determine if pee sticks are getting darker. Good luck.

@periwinklebee: just wanted to say that these new FRERs are kind of terrible! It takes forever for the lines to dry/darken, and even then I still don't think they're very good. Just wanted to give you a little reassurance.

@mrskansas: @theotherstark: Thank you! Yeah, there's no way staring at those could be good for my state of mind.
