Just a rambling vent because I need to talk about it more but I've already whined to all my friends 🤣. I'm a preschool teacher and I have long planned to edge out of the profession and into something new. I was planning on making that leap this winter after getting my youngest through the transition into kindergarten. But I would have had plenty of time to job search while in my current steady job...
But instead I'm in the middle of a whirlwind job search while teaching 40/hours a week and single parenting my two kids. And I have a very hard deadline because my children start distance learning in four weeks. I can't still be teaching when that starts. I know it's going to be fine, but my god I need one of these job applications to result in something. Soon. And this week I have to tell my boss. And my coteacher knows and is so sad.

Ugh, so sorry!! Now is the worst time to be looking for work, especially if you’re transitioning. I’m sure there is huge competition for entry level jobs no matter what sector. I know you said you just want to rant, but I know a number of people here hiring managers and might be able to give resume tips.

@wrkbrk: administrative or low/mid level HR work! Preferably in the KC metro area because I'd love to be in an actual office when the world calms down.
I have a dozen apps out. I'm hoping this isn't a time when it takes hundreds to get a hit...

I know the company I work for has basically been in a hiring freeze since March. The message is basically to look internally and reallocate reassures as needed. It’s definitely not a great time to be looking with everything going on.

@MrsSRS: I bet you will be able to get something soon. Lot's of people will be too scared to return to work and so many are making more money on unemployment right now that they don't want to return to work. Employers can't carry this burden. So they will need to replace those employees. Best of luck to you. And god bless all of you teachers - preschool and otherwise. There are so many retired or displaced teachers in my area who are offering to homeschool kids and help with distance learning as needed. it's amazing to see all who come out to help in times of need like this. Teachers have amazing hearts. I hope you get something you like soon!

@MrsSRS: I feel positive about this. My secretary was let go and found another position pretty quickly. Apply far and wide in a couple of big batches and I bet you will get some nibbles!! Do you have your references lined up and ready to go etc? I feel like for admin or HR jobs whether people like you is super important (I’m sure they do!).

@wrkbrk: I do! Thank you. There are a ton of places hiring now if you don't have to be remote. The remote is what's slowing me down, I think. But it isn't optional right now.

Are you in the Virtforce group on Facebook? They are specifically dialed into remote work and share postings, resources, etc. There’s recruiters in there too! Just an idea.

@jhd: thank you!!!! The whole company is from home at least through the end of the year so that gives me time to bank any goodwill necessary for later flexibility. I haven't disclosed my whole single parent of two young distance learners situation yet.

Congratulations! Nordstrom’s annual sale is going on right now. Loft and old navy have some affordable and machine washable blazers, tops and dress pants. Go slowly with shopping, you might find it is less dressy than you expected, or freezing cold, etc.
