Regardless of the true story, the republicans refusal to take this seriously is absolutely appalling. It doesn't have to be partisan- these allegations are being made about a nominee to the Supreme Court. Doesn't it make sense to at the very least investigate and slow the process down a little so that we can be sure we aren't putting a predator into an extremely powerful position?
oh. wait. we already did that. guess it doesn't matter anymore.

@Silva: I agree with you. It’s like the GOP forgets we have precedent here with Anita Hill/ Justice Thomas. They won’t always be the majority party. This will come back to haunt them. No FBI investigation that takes all of a few days.
persimmon / 1495 posts
@Silva: Agreed 100%. I will say that as much as I hate the idea of the court being controlled by conservatives and think there should be an official investigation, I do think it's interesting that Diane Feinstein had the information for awhile before making it public. I know she has said that it was to protect Blasey Ford, and that may be true, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt that it got them just a little closer to the midterm elections.
pomelo / 5573 posts
@Chuckles: From what I understand, it wasn’t to protect Ford, it was at her explicit request - she didn’t want it released.

I believe her, but I'm so completely disgusted by this prick's politics and the certainty that he'd vote only based on his religion/gop affiliation rather than actually be a discerning judge that this assault and his denial of the whole thing is around #25 on things that I hate about him.
Regarding the politics surrounding the victim, what bothers me here that isn't being talked about by anyone I know is the hypocrisy of the dems. I hope that MeToo has changed this, but so many of the people foaming at the mouth over this simultaneously think Juanita Broderick is a liar. we didn't hear a peep about it in 2016 because there was an election to win, but I honestly think Bill Clinton is a rapist and Hillary is a sack of shit for being married to him. Kind of an aside, but I'd really like some equal treatment for rapists and attempted rapists regardless of which side of the aisle they're on.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Whoa to that CNN clip. Just whoa. It’s okay because they were kids? What are these woman saying to our youth today by minimizing what happened? That’s just gross and awful. And yet they don’t accept that it happened at all. Uh yeah. And pretty much everything @LCTBQE: said.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@Amorini: I know!! let’s be clear this free pass when it comes to youthful indiscretions *ahem assault* is reserved for a privileged few.. Already Corey Booker’s admission that he copped a feel in a consensual make out session is being compared to forcing somebody into a room, two against one night I add, then trying to take forcibly take her clothes and off and cover her mouth when she panicked. If the color lines were reversed we’d be hearing a different story.
persimmon / 1483 posts
So, I believe her. I also believe that it’s possible that he doesn’t remember that it happened. What’s been super interesting/ depressing to me is that what makes her story so believable is that most women I know have experienced something similar, in varying degrees of seriousness. Most didn’t report it, or even think they should report it (like, at 19, we thought getting groped at college parties was par for the course, not a potential crime that anyone would care about), but if the dude that tried to restrain me and force me onto a bed my freshman year was in the running for the Supreme Court, I’d sure as hell tell everyone 20 years later that he was an asshole. It’s mind boggling to me that people - ahem, men - don’t understand that.

@Madison43: Yes, this exactly. So many of us believe it's plausible because we've been there...
persimmon / 1483 posts
@LCTBQE: and yes to you’re comments about hypocrisy. I don’t think for a second any of the dems actually care what happened to Ford...it’s just being used as an opportunity to block an appointment.
nectarine / 2461 posts
@Madison43: yeah, yes to everything you said. I'm sort of optimistic that this type of situation and the victim's silence being (depressingly) typical is *not* going to be the social environment that our daughters grow up with.
pomelo / 5866 posts
Just saw CNN clip. I want to throw up. This is awful. Always has been. We have been there. How could they not know? Just disgusted.
The sliver of a silver lining is at least people are talking about it now. My action step is to open up a conversation with a cousin who never reported and never spoke a word about it to me. But I heard whispers of it from a family member. I’m asking her opinion of this and if it brings up old wounds or it is healing to talk about it. I want to be a safe place for people to get confidence to report. This culture of silence has to stop. It is the perp’s fault and responsibility completely.
nectarine / 2431 posts
@LCTBQE: Exactly. I come from a long line of women who have been sexually abused (and hid it/were "othered" because of it) and I am going to do everything in my power to stop the trend for my daughter.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@LCTBQE: ok, I had to Wiki Juanita Braddick to learn more. I think her initial denials of the rape were in part due to the era she was raised in and that of course plays a factor into her believability. The Wiki article does show how complicit Hillary Clinton was in all of Bill’s dirty deeds.

I believe her. She told her therapist about this in 2012. Are we supposed to believe she set the stage to frame him for sexual assault six years ago JUST in case he became a nominee for Supreme Court? Please. 🙄 I also think a lot of congressmen DGAF because they’ve probably done similar things, or at least questionable things to women in the past. You know, the whole “boys will be boys” mentality. It’s disgusting, but not surprising, how so many people have reacted. ETA: also trump’s tweet about this was so appallingly tasteless. Not that it’s news that he’s a piece of shit toward women, but that was looooow.
pomelo / 5257 posts
Also, in other “least surprising ever” news, the New Yorker reports that another woman has come forward with sexual misconduct allegations against him.
persimmon / 1233 posts
I believe her and the one that was just published in the New Yorker. I really really really would like to not think about the penises of our political figures. Is that so much to ask?!
pineapple / 12566 posts
@MrsSCB: yep. The link:
https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/senate-democrats-investigate-a-new-allegation-of-sexual-misconduct-from-the-supreme-court-nominee-brett-kavanaughs-college-years-deborah-ramirez
I hope what will come of this metoo era is a legitimate process through which these claims can be thoroughly and properly investigated. Anita Hill wrote an excellent op ed in the NYT a few days ago laying out a proposed process to handle abuse claims. What I really dislike is the cloud of uncertainty that hangs over every claim on whether or not something will be done and whether or not the accuser and the accused will be accorded due process.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
I believe her.
But I think the GOP will do everything they can to ensure this nominee goes through. They don't care about victims of sexual assault (just look at their President who they stand behind 100%). All they MIGHT care about is the optics of this and whether it'll come back to bite them. But their base also doesn't care - they want conservative judges and laws, and however they get those, they don't care.
The only hope we can have is that Collins might care enough about being reelected that she would vote against him. And even then, her reelection isn't until what? 2020? That's a long time away. Voters have short memories, so she can probably just go along with the rest of the GOP and assume her constituents will forget about this by the time reelection comes around.
We're all screwed, fyi.

I read the opening remarks by Dr. Fordnand Judge Kavanaugh. I believe her. His statement seemed more reasonable than the assertions he made on Fox News such as he likely drank too much in HS and the allegations are very serious.
The hearing will be interesting since the GOP’s sex crimes attorney is actually a prosecutor. I’m hoping if she believes her the rest of the Senators will too. I just don’t know if any of this will matter at the end of the day as the Republicans tally up the pro vs con list. The pro/ con list isn’t whether he did it or not it’s more can they keep their seats and supporters.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: You're exactly right about the pro/con list. The question is whether they can still confirm him without it making them lose their Senate majority. I'm sure he'll be confirmed, unfortunately.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Grassley is grand-standing. Basically starting off saying Dems and Ford's attorney have obstructed this whole thing and that they've interviewed witnesses who have said none of this happened. Awesome way to start a supposed "fair" hearing.

@Adira: this poor woman looks like she’s going to have a panic attack - her glasses are foggy and she’s breathing super heavy.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Now he's claiming that the GOP has made a significant effort to look into the claims by the other two victims, but that their attorneys stand in the way of gathering any evidence. Also claimed that the FBI investigation wouldn't give them a concrete answer, which is why they didn't bother doing one.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Madison43: Agreed! She looks soooo nervous!! I feel so bad for her!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Now Feinstein is doing some grand-standing.
ETA: I admit, I'm biased, but I agree with what Feinstein is saying. It makes no sense to me that the GOP decided not to do an FBI investigation or hear from any other witnesses, unless they really don't want to know the truth at all about this situation.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Dr. Blasey Ford sounds soooo nervous. I feel so bad she has to go through this.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Madison43: Agreed... she sounds like she's barely holding it together.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
I have a meeting at 11, so I'm going to miss a good portion of this hearing. But just listening to her speak, how upset she is, her description of the assault... I believe her.
clementine / 935 posts
@Adira: She's doing a great job, though. She's so brave. I wish I could reach through the TV and hug her. I feel so bad that they're making her relive this, in public and on national television.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Senator Graham basically just said "Why shouldn't I believe Kavanaugh??" Guess his mind is made up.
persimmon / 1381 posts
This entire thing is so painful to watch. I watched Dr Ford and some of the questioning this morning. I thought she was incredible and so brave. She was obviously so terrified but I thought it was inspiring to see her sit there and tell her story for the entire nation, despite being scared. I think everyone should watch her. She's a hero. I've been thinking about it all day.
