I would apply for the other job just to find out more about it. Flexibility is huge, but so is that amount of time you are spending commuting. 100 miles 2x a week a lot! Seems like there is no harm in checking it out.

I hear you on the boredom. I was feeling really burnt out at my old job (where I was not earning all that much money) and had just started looking around when I got pregnant. It's tough when you just go through the motions all day long and come home and can't even say what you did. Then again, I find most jobs are kind of boring to talk about!

I sort of did this while I was on maternity leave. It was all within my company though and I didn't take a pay cut so there was a little less risk. But I left a job that was just as cushy as you describe, very little stress, totally manageable work, boss with 2 kids who was always cutting out early herself, ability to work from home, etc. I was just getting really bored with the work and after years of cycling through the same accounts I wanted something different. I definitely made the right choice as I love what I'm doing now and you can't put a price on that, but I'd say if you rely on your income that heavily then maybe think twice or try to negotiate a higher offer.

I'm lazy, so I would probably keep the first job

@Cherrybee: Don't cry! Honestly, I think he is right in that you should at least go back to your current job and see how you feel. Returning from mat leave really does change a lot of things and your priorities have shifted so much. I think it will be much better to see how you feel after a few months back when you have figured out your routine and found your groove and then you can go from there.

Taking the paycut for the change of scene seems like an odd choice as it sounds like you would simply be bored again after 3 months at the new place...
