Professional, but might depend on your industry? I would still go for something tasteful and not you cropped out of another photo or something.

The only "rule" i have is that it should be just you in the photo, not a family photo, for example.

Professional for sure unless you are in the business of something fun? I can see using a fun/work related picture if you are a skydiving instructor or something.

I don't know if mine is professional or fun. It's somewhere in the middle with it being sorta professional but not an actual professional photo.
It's a photo that DH took of me on my first day of work. So I'm dressed professionally. Photo is kinda fuzzy but I think it works.

In addition to this, if you have a good photo of yourself from your wedding (if you are a man) is that appropriate? You're wearing a 3 piece suit, tie and a boutineer.

Mine is an "action" shot from a work function, so it's kind of in the middle of professional and casual. A lot of my LI friends have pictures that were obviously cropped from a nice group photo and are super zoomed in and grainy - I think that looks kinda bad. That being said I hate LI and only use it out of necessity so I don't really care how pictures look!

@mediagirl: No. It needs to be a regular pro(fessional dress) photo. It matters! It only doesn't matter when your picture is a good professional photo. Otherwise, you become the person who is using a wedding photo on his/her resume. If that makes sense!

@mediagirl: @MsLipGloss: My husband has a photo from our wedding (of just him) on linkedin, and he's a recruiter so he uses linkedin way more than your average person.... he does quite well for himself so it seems like the wedding photo isn't hurting him!

@mediagirl: I know someone in the tech industry that has his profile pics as his wedding portrait. Personally, it's a little cringeworthy and obvious that it's a wedding picture.
One of my coworkers has her profile pic on our internal profile as a professional one wearing a spaghetti strap tank. It's pretty cringeworthy as well especially since it was taken in the studio at the office for professional pics.
My Linkedin pic is from my bachelorette party weekend. It's a good portrait shot.
