What do you do with your loose change? How do you keep it?
We typically use our debit or credit cards and just have a baggy full of change. I take it with me and use it to buy coffee or if I am paying with cash I try to give exact change with it.

I keep it in my car and use it to buy half price cokes at Sonic.

I always keep enough in my desk for a candy bar out of the vending machine at the office (I haven't had one in almost a year, but I still like knowing it is there, just in case!), and hubs has a hollowed out carved thingy that we dump the rest into.

We keep the quarters in our cars for metered parking. The rest goes in an old empty candle jar and when it's filled up I take it to the credit union in a plastic bag. #classy

We have a plastic coke bottle. Every now and then we'll have rolling session and deposit it. Usually proceeds go to sushi.

We save it in a jar at home and take it to be changed into notes every few months or so. When I say *we* put it in the jar.... DH just leaves it lying around in piles on windowsills, worktops and tables - whichever surface he is standing by when he takes it out of his pocket - and I move it to the jar angrily! DH likes to joke that I have a problem with change..... haa-de-haar.

We have a big, empty, washed out wine jug that we put spare change into--it's mostly quarters, and a few random bills I find in pockets sometimes (although it annoys D when I do that).

I put in in a big jar I bought from Ikea and I take it to a Coinstar when it gets full.
I am so paranoid about seeing loose change...my baby puts everything in her mouth!
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
We store it in a jar and cash it in when the jar gets full! That's not often though because we never use cash. Lol
coconut / 8430 posts
We have random buckets at home. I really should take them to the bank! I saw that they installed a coin machine recently.
grapefruit / 4400 posts
We have a coin dish in our living room and fill C's piggy bank with it. If we get change at a drive-through, we put it in the cigarette ash container in our cars and use it for tolls (or other drive-through purchases).
pomegranate / 3716 posts
We had a big plastic jar (about 14" tall) which took us 4 years to fill. We changed it at the bank and got $375 back, and used it that weekend to gamble in Vegas
We got one of those automatic coin counters as a gag gift for Xmas, but the jar is really small. Not sure if I like it.

I use mine! I keep my quarters in the car for meters and random little purchases. Wagon sr has a jar and when it gets full we coin star it for a date night. It's always about $65 so we get to splurge!

We keep it in the middle console of my car for random purchases.

We keep it in a mason jar in our dining room. Eventually we'll take it to the bank.

I rarely ever have change (I almost never use cash), and I keep the little I do in my wallet.
My DH gets a lot of change and we keep it in this metal box on our bedroom dresser. Every few months we dump it in to one of those machines that counts it and gives a receipt which can be used at the grocery store to get cash back.
coconut / 8861 posts
I have a plastic bag filled with coins. I go to the grocery store and use Coinstar. We get an Amazon card with the coin value.

We each have a little dish we keep it in and a couple times a year DH will roll it up and we will change it to bills. We don't usually use cash all that much anymore!

G has a robot piggy bank in her room and we chunk it all in there. We call it her college fund

@dagret: me too! I love my spare change candle holder. It's so classy.
I do try to keep, some in my car in case if emergency.

I used to have a ton of coins (in Switzerland, you have the equivalent of $1, $2 and $5 in coins). I would carry them all in a zip top case and I would pay for coffees this way, usually counting out 10 cent stacks, lol. My friends would always cower in the corner, lol, but I had to get rid of all of that change.

DS has a little mason jar that says "don't touch my 'stache" with a pic of a mustache on it and change goes into that.

@Cherrybee: do you and I have the same husband? Before we were married I called DH's bedroom carpet the "change carpet" because I'd always find coins on the floor. Now he keeps the change on his nightstand, on his dresser, on the ironing board (?), etc.
We have a jar on DH's dresser (the jar is ON his dresser and he won't put the change in!!!) and we take it to the bank every once in a while to put into savings. Last time we had $38. I once had over $200 in change. I love extra money.

I keep a little stash in my car and the rest go in a cup inside the house. We use it to buy snacks or coffee in the morning. DS got a piggy bank for Christmas so any loose change that goes in there will get deposited into his account!
papaya / 10343 posts
We don't really get a ton because we rarely use cash, but we have a bowl in our junk drawer we toss it into. And I periodically scavenge the quarters for a little jar I keep in my car for parking meters. Although *most* meters in Columbus now take credit cards which is amazing.

We kept throwing loose change in those huge clear 5 gallon reusable water bottles and sealed the lid tight with super glue. We did this for 5 years and also threw in paper currency too. When it got so full, we had to bust it open and cashed it in for almost $2000!!! We are restarting our 2nd bucket of change! I will post a pic later.
grapefruit / 4085 posts
We have a tin in the kitchen that we store the loose change in. We use it for metered parking and also when the tin is full, we turn it in at the bank for paper money that goes into our "fun" stash.
grapefruit / 4997 posts
We cut an opening after it was super glued to add money in. I think the actual amount was $1839 and some change.
grapefruit / 4997 posts
These are large sized reusable grocery bags. It was really fun to save!
pomegranate / 3272 posts
We kept ours in a few random cups and turned it in to coinstar and used it to buy our DSLR. We did not have quite as much as @Kimberlybee though. I'm super impressed

We have a small stash of change in my car and another container in the house where we dump the rest. We just had to upgrade from a Benihana buddha glass to the bigger ceramic container. We haven't cashed it in for 3-4 years, but since we use our debit cards so much it probably isn't much anyway.
@Cherrybee: Haha, my DH is exactly the same. He leaves his change EVERYWHERE. In my mind that leave it up for grabs
But usually I just put it in our giant container.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
We have one of those change counter containers as well as a bowl in our junk drawer. We just collect it and then turn it in now and then. Last time we had $91, not bad since we do dip into it for things.
watermelon / 14206 posts
It doesn't last. I give DS quarters for ice cream at school and for the stupid coin machines at the grocery store. The rest usually ends up in his piggy bank one way or another. He never spends it so maybe its most safe there lol.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
@Kimberlybee: Our family did this with a giant bottle! Huge, 2 and a half foot tall bottle and it took us years to fill it up. We each got quite a bit put in our savings account from that thing! It was so cool.
coconut / 8234 posts
Pre-LO we used to keep our loose change in a vase. Once the vase got full DH would roll the change. We saved up enough to help purchase the lovely MacBook Pro I am typing to you ladies from right now.
Now all of our loose change goes into one of her two banks. She has a real piggy bank and one of those plastic crayon banks, both are almost full.
apricot / 344 posts
I keep our spare change in an unused jewelry box. Quarters go toward laundry, and the rest gets saved until we have enough to cash it in.
pomegranate / 3779 posts
If I'm in the car, it goes in the console to pay for sodas at Sonic (@Leialou - love happy hour!), otherwise it goes into a glass beer mug we have in the closet. We take it to Coinstar periodically for a gift card.
@Cherrybee - DH is the same - he leaves it everywhere! I am constantly moving it to our change mug.
