At what age did you let your little one start to sleep with a lovey or security blanket? DD is 4.5 months and I have the a&a security blankets for her. She has just recently started to soothe herself by sucking on her thumb and a little part of the silk on the blanket. I'm torn, its the only way she self sootnes because she doesnt use a paci, but im still nervous to leave it in her crib.

Those are adorable! We have the swaddle blanket only. I was wondering about a lovey that is safe for babies our age.

@winniebee: yea I love it! So soft and perfect little size! I bought it originally because when I nurse Lil when I'm out I use an a&a swaddle blanket and she kept playing with it in her hand and seemed to like to hang onto it. We seriously use the security blanket at every feeding now for her to fidget with! And there are super cute patterns!

I asked my dr about it at DS's 6 month appt and she said it's fine if they sleep with a light blanket, esp the A&A ones because they're so breathable. I wouldn't worry about it. Especially since the lovey's are so much smaller.

LO is 13 months and still doesn't use a lovey. She just likes her thumb.

Liv started growing an attachment with hers right around 3 months, but slept with it starting at like 5 months. I just made sure that it wasnt over her face or next to her face when her head was turned

Can I ask, is there an upside to having a lovey? I received a cute little bunny lovey similar to the photo below and LO loves playing with it, but I Dont let her sleep with it yet.

At 6.5 months when we sleep trained. My mom knit him a turtle that quickly became his lovey. {photo is from around 15 months when he was screaming for joy}

@Mrsbells: self soothing really. If Liv is very upset or overtired, I can tell her "go get loveybear" and she hugs her and it calms her down. Or she rubs her head and it soothes her to sleep. Its about familiartity. Brings them comfort and security

DD was born in the winter so I've had a blanket in her crib. Whenever it's nap or bedtime, I give it to her and she rubs it on her face and falls asleep. She'll do it with any blanket, but most of the time I give her a chenille blanket.

@Mrsbells: Im sure its possible, but we havent had any issues yet. Id rather have a dependency on a lovey than thumb sucking or a paci or whatever.

My son is 21 months old and uses a lovey to fall asleep, it's a gloworm that plays music.
He only gets it when it is time for naps or night sleep, so it always stays in the crib. We haven't needed it for any other soothing, so I am okay with it. I think he likes it because it gives him some control, he can play it and the face lights up, which in turn, helps him to fall asleep.

@Mrsbells: @looch: exactly. They dont have to have their lovey on them 24/7. Like Liv doesnt NEED it by her side, but we leave one in her crib and one out in the open. Occasionally she will walk by and see it, grab her and give it a big kiss, then put it down. Its mostly for comfort and sleep

@LivsMama: my son does the same, sometimes he spys it in the crib and wants it, but he turns it on and then he moves onto the next thing.
I was anti-lovey before my son needed it for sleep because I was worried he'd get attached to some obscure stuffed animal, carry it around everywhere and lose it...then I'd be scrambling to find a replacement. Luckily, he chose something that I can find easily, lol.

@Mrsbells: I have just started giving my baby (almost 5 months old ) something similar with every sleep. Even if it's not doing anything much for him now, I am convinced that it will help him falling asleep in the long run. He grabs it when he wakes up and rubs it on his face and can sometimes fall back asleep (like he just did right now at morning nap---yay). His has a satin-silky material on one side of the blanket and it is a bear, and blue.

We gave DD a lovey at 4 months. She'd fall asleep with it, then I'd move it out of crib. I think she was nine months, maybe, before I let her sleep with it. At about 1 year, we also introduced a blankie.
We let DS sleep with a blankie since we swaddle weaned at about 4 months. It's crocheted, so it has big holes in it and I'm too concerned about him suffocating in it.
