Measles Outbreak in SoCal (related to Disneyland)

@anonysquire: Well how fortunate for you that your baby is safe and healthy, but maybe you should consider your words to a parent who has lose their child as you tell Ms. Badger that if a child gets a disease and it doesn't end well, that was just supposed to happen and it's life. How on earth do you think it is even remotely okay to say something like that, particularly to her? I am furious for her right now.

And as far as you telling people to go complain on GOMI instead, I'll pass. I prefer to tell people directly when I think their behavior is insensitive and appalling. I won't even bother pointing out the multitude of other things that are wrong with your post because I know you don't really care or want to discuss it, but seriously, look beyond yourself for half a second and think before you say something so flippant to a mother who you know has lost their child.

@wonderstruck: Thanks for the advice. My comment wasnt aimed towards her. Am I not allowed to share my opinion? I am religious and believe God has a plan for us that sometimes sucks, but we can't do anything about it. I understand Mrs. Badger lost her baby, and I feel horrible she had to go through it. I have a lot of respect for her. But for my family and I, we are not going to go crazy trying to prevent the unpreventable. Like I said, people die all the time. People die in their sleep. You can't prevent death unfortunately. It sucks. It really does.

@anonysquire: Doesn't your daughter wear some kind of helmet to help correct something(sorry I can't remember the exact reason) Why have her wear it? Isn't how her head is in God's plan?

@Purpledaisy: ya I don't respond well to sarcasm. Sorry.

@anonysquire: it's actually not sarcasm. It's a question. You're so into "God's plan" I'm curious as to your reasoning behind the helmet.

    @Purpledaisy: craniosynostosis. Google it.

@anonysquire: the point isn't what the medical issue is. The question is why is a helmet in god's plan but not vaccines?

  8. anonysquire

    cantaloupe / 6923 posts

@Purpledaisy: hold up. I never said vaccines are not in God's plan. I said my baby has an autoimmune disease that makes it so she is not medically able to get certain vaccines.

Love how you ladies only read what you want to read and pick apart what I say. Get your kids vaccinated or dont, I don't care. I'm doing what's best for my baby and leaving the rest up to God. And yes I also work closely with my babies doctors. This isn't something I pulled outta my bum and just decided which ones she can't get or can. Thanks for keeping this respectful... oh wait

I can't wait for this small subset of society to swing back to believing in science and medicine again. Unfortunately, some of those kids will probably die or be seriously injured in the process, and so will innocent immunicompromised persons. Maybe it'll get so bad that the government has to step in and nix this exemption process.

My dad actually believes that vaccines are used for "population control". So.....yeah. Wrap your brain around that ridiculous concept.

@anonysquire: Why are you all fired up? Your daughter has a medical condition where she can not get certain vaccinations. You are reliant upon the herd immunity in order to protect her. What am I missing here?

@blackbird: My dad has to be in the hospital right now for certain treatments. He has zero. ZEEERO. Immunities. There is an influenza outbreak in our city right now and the doctors were sending him home to lessen the chance of his catching something from the hospital (along with the fact that he was feeling ok). It is scary knowing he's there and people who dont give a shit or are too ignorant could kill him right now.

@.twist.: I hear you. My dad has immune system deficiencies (he's a cancer survivor) and my mom has an autoimmune disease. Thankfully they're able to get the vaccines, but the more other people get it, the more they're protected. This stuff just frustrates me to no end! I hope your dad stays safe

@blackbird: Agree. Waiting for this trend to be over. Or for the government to get sick of it and require at LEAST those children attending public schools to be vaxxed unless they have a medical exemption.

It is really frustrating because I see a ton of this right now. I joined a "natural parenting" fb group for my city because I do agree with a lot their viewpoints (blw, cloth diapering, baby wearing, a gentler approach to parenting, etc) but MOST of the people on the group are either anti-vaxxers or selective vaxxers. Or at least most of the people who post about vaccines are (I've never seen a person *admit* to being a traditional vaxxer). They also all glom onto this one local ped who doesn't hassle them about non-vaxxing, because most around here do (like for example, my pediatrician won't take your child as a patient at all unless you agree to a traditional vax schedule). And a lot of them refuse doctors at all and say doctors only make you sicker and they treat pretty much all illnesses with infusions and essential oils and whatever. Needless to say I'm not really looking for mommy friends in that group

  14. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

@Mae: I struggled with that too. I wanted to join a local group for the advice on similar topics but got so tired of every message from the admin having a comment about "vaccines...*wink wink*". And I was like, what do you mean, wink wink no vaccines? Are the kids at this going to have no vaccines and this meetup is going to be a pox party? I did end up with the pediatrician favored by a lot of parents there but only because he decided to insist on vax, but our vaccine schedule still got screwed up by the practice and now that we've switched I'm trying to chase down his missing shots. I'm sure the average parent doesn't even care that much which scares me.

  15. blackbird

    wonderful grape / 20453 posts

@.twist.: So sad and frustrating that he has to be home to be safer. At what point can you specifically blame one person for causing harm and hold them responsible? They're gambling with others' lives. Grrr. I hope he's ok.

@Mae: YES with the parenting groups. I see it all the time with my local one and I have yet to see anyone make an argument that sounds legit. Half the time it's "should I vax my child? What do you think" It's all monstrous skepticism and lack of education regarding what vaccines actually DO and what they don't do.

Don't even get me started on those goddamned oils.

@blackbird: @Mae: Omg. THE OILS. Lol someone I know is trying to push those on Instagram right now (I'm guessing she's selling them, although she's being pretty vague, which is kind of shady in my opinion...) Sure, treat an ear infection or the flu with essential oils, why not?!

D also has an immune disorder and is more at risk. I hate that some parents willfully choose not to vaccinate and put so many vulnerable people at risk.

@blackbird: @MrsSCB: I think I just read recently that the FDA is going after the essential oils now? God, I hope so. I hate all the woo stuff going around now.

@loveisstrange: I hope so! I wouldn't be surprised either -- people shouldn't go around claiming medical benefits from just any random crap. I'm sick of seeing so many women trying to supplement their incomes by basically selling snake oil. This isn't tupperware, people, stop trying to play doctor.

ETA: OMG. It's worse than I thought:

"The letters, posted online on Wednesday, document multiple claims from the companies or their paid representatives that essential oils and other natural remedies can "help prevent your contracting the Ebola virus" and in at least one instance, "effectively kill the Ebola virus.""

    wonderful grape / 20453 posts

@.twist.: gah. if only there was a vaccine for the common cold. I'd be first in line!

@loveisstrange: YES they are! Doterra and Young Living are under the scope. Because they falsely claim to cure shit they can't. But the damage is done. People have bought into the hokey science of it. And i'm cool with oils and aromatherapy for certain things but curing diseases? Drawing a virus out of a body? Giving them to an infant? EEK. Come on.

  24. loveisstrange

    pineapple / 12526 posts

@MrsSCB: I read about the Ebola thing last Fall. Effing RIDICULOUS.

@blackbird: It never ceases to make my jaw drop when I see people recommending giving them to newborns. And it's always the "nothing but breastmilk will touch my speshul snowflake's tummy for at least a year" people too. Like.... you think formula is poison but you will give your 7 day old baby some random oil that a lady sold you out of her living room?! WHAT?!

  25. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@loveisstrange: I mean, talk about fear-mongering... "You might get ebola here in the U.S. even though doctors are saying that's virtually impossible!!! So you better buy some of these oils or else!" Geez...

  26. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

@blackbird: The oils!!!!! A parent support group endorsed by EI (as in they handed me a pamphlet for them) actually told me that rubbing an essential oil on J's ear would cure his deafness. WHAT?!! You mean we don't have to do the years of speech therapy and the implants and sign language and he doesn't have to face a lifetime of being deaf? I could just rub an oil on my newborn's ears?

  27. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@spaniellove: No.They.Didn't. Cure Deafness? Are you for real? I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. If only you would have been told this by the doctors! Therapy? HA! Sign Language! ANCIENT! Try our fancy deaf curing oils!

    wonderful grape / 20453 posts

@loveisstrange: I can't even with that hypocrisy. But yes, it never ceases to amaze me how people think natural means "always good and not harmful".

Ugh, I hate the EO thing. I saw a mom on the one of the babywearing facebook groups say that she and her husband were arguing over whether to treat her baby's fever with babywearing and essential oils, or with tylenol. HOW is that a debate??

Yes, I use them in my house. They make a great indoor anti-bug spray. Would I ever in my life give them to my son to ingest? Hell no.

Just wanted to link this article:
    http://www.latimes.com/local/orangecounty/la-me-measles-huntington-beach-20150121-story.html#page=1

It seems that any school in Orange Country that has a student with confirmed measles will start barring all unvaccinated students for 21 days. This has happened in 1 high school so far. Additionally, 5 Disney employees have measles. It seems we may only be at the beginning of this outbreak.

I hope that all OC Bees (especially those with little ones who haven't yet been vaccinated) keep their children away from anyone with any signs or symptoms of colds, as measles first presents and is contagious with coughing and sneezing before the rash appears.

@blackbird: @.twist.: @spaniellove: @loveisstrange: @ShootingStar: OMG with the oils. I met someone who, no joke, believes that her son's autism was caused by the MMR vaccine, and that putting a certain essential oil on his spine (can't remember which one) "cures" his autism for however long the oil lasts, or whatever. So she applies the oil several times a day. She is getting him no other therapies or anything...since the oil cures it...

Needless the say the rest of her children (the one with autism is the eldest) have not received any vaccines.

  33. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@Ms.Badger: That seems like a wise decision by the health officials. It does suck for the kids who physically aren't able to get vaccinated and have to miss school, though. I have a friend who lives in Orange County, and her kids' school did the same thing when they had a student with the measles a little while ago (not related to this current outbreak). They kept all the unvaccinated kids out of school for a certain period of time. This was a private school, though, and I think that decision was made at the school admin level.

Yeah, I'm an OC bee, AND i was planning on taking C to Disneyland this coming Monday. She's only had the first shot, so i'm checking with my ped if we shouldn't go.

@Ms.Badger: @MrsSCB: I think that was the right call. Scary to be in The OC right now.

Another thing is, the MMR vaccine requires 2 doses for you to be considered fully protected. The second dose isn't usually administered until a child is 4-6 years, so a lot of children under the age of 4 are still at risk even if they've been vaccinated.

I just got my daughter her second dose, but my son only has one of his two MMR shots so far. Really hoping that protection is enough.

Exemption rates have been climbing - anyone in California can look up their local Kindergarten's exemption rates through this site: http://spreadsheets.latimes.com/immunization-levels-california/

  37. Mrs. Jacks

    blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts

@MrsSCB: people with autoimmune diseases are actually encouraged to get all their vaccines... Sometimes certain live viruses have to be delayed for a few immunosuppressed kids... But otherwise we get those vaccines into vulnerable kids!

  38. Ms.Badger

    clementine / 918 posts

@HabesBabe: Oh, I forgot to mention, but the article also states that all Disney park employees have to prove they have been vaccinated or have immunity or are placed on leave. I think this is a great move and I hope more large employees require vaccination for employment.

@Mrs. High Heels: The elementary that I'm districted for is stupid-high (we were mentioned in the article) - maybe that should have been higher on the list when picking where to buy a house. I'm really hoping the tides turn before this LO is ready for elementary.

  39. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@Mrs. Jacks: I know, my mom who has an autoimmune disease definitely gets all hers. I don't think I said they shouldn't get them?

  40. HabesBabe

    grapefruit / 4400 posts

@Mrs. High Heels: Yeah, I've been reading up on it ever since it came out. I just spoke to our ped's office and they said that going to Disneyland isn't any more risky than going to the grocery store, and that her 1st shot is supposed to keep her immune until her 2nd shot at 5. I'm waiting a call back to speak directly to our doctor (I just talked to one of the office staff who had talking points given to them by the doctors in the practice).

But I'm for sure pulling H out of Gymboree for sure, since he's only 8 months.
