What toys would you consider being the most educational or challenging toys for a one year old?
We have things like blocks and shape sorter, but I'm looking for some more ideas for age appropriate toys that will challenge DS and help develope his fine motor skills.

Wagon Jr. loved the ring stacker and puzzles. Melissa and Doug also does a board that has buckles and things like that.

Thanks. We have a Mellisa and Doug snowman stacker DS got for Christmas and a puzzle DS just got not too long ago. I know the buckle board you are talking about! I always loved that thing 
I might have to go pick it up.

@anbanan15: yeah, we never got it (we get so many hand me downs that we have a strict no-buy policy for toys over $5) but whenever we come across it at someone's house or a store, Wagon Jr. goes crazy over it!

oh he also liked those pop-up toys... the ones with the button, slide thing, knob to turn, etc. and the characters pop up. He still plays with those.

Our little boy just loves his leapfrog peek-a-shoe. They put a ball in and it hides under a shoe. They have to lift the shoes and find it. It is definitely problem solving (though mostly he just likes dropping the balls and other toys in it). The other one he just got was the Leapfrog dog Scout. You connect it to your computer and it says his name and favorite foods and stuff like that. He loves that thing even though he has only had it a few days. It sings songs and counts and does emotions.

Oh and cars. My little boy just loves cars right now and they will grow with him. He will make the car noises and everything now.

@brownie: we love scout around here! I saw the peek-a-shoe one but wasn't sure. I was also interested in the picnic basket and potsy. Thoughts on those?

I was also thinking if getting crayons, markers or something. They have that "my first crayola" line an color wonder.
