Yesterday, at work, a coworker noticed I was scratching my belly and warned me "don't do that! That's how you get stretchmarks." Ummmm...what?
What humdingers have you heard?

if you put your hands over your head, the cord will get twisted up around the baby.

Not advice but a few relatives wanted to touch my belly to bring good luck to themselves (not for me). Weird.

Nothing too nuts, yet, but I have gotten some 'so WHEN are you going to quit riding your bike already?' Then I tell them I'm not planning to stop as long as it's comfortable, and they look at me like I'm an idiot.

The meanest one was when I told my MIL that I had GD for the second time. She said something like great...this baby will be behind just like LO 2. (gross motor delays) She advised me to disregard all of my Dr's advice and eat whatever I want.

@sarac: I bike commute too and have been wondering if/when I'll get comments like that. We just spilled the beans this week so we will see!

the one that is inane and irritates me the most is "enjoy your sleep now"! Like anyone in the third tri is enjoying really refreshing all night long sleep.
pomelo / 5093 posts
@buttermilk: Oh, good for you. Are you still riding a standard bike? I bought a very upright dutch bike to ride now, with a big fat saddle lowered way down. I find that my commuter just isn't comfortable now, but I really miss it.
nectarine / 2086 posts
@sarac: I also have a very upright dutch bike. I haven't had any problems so far! My midwife said I should be fine my whole pregnancy but we will see about that.

Also my boss keeps commenting about pregnancy brain, how bad she had it, and how I'm going to do a bunch of dumb shit for like the next 2 years so just get used to it. And have I hit the "retarded pregnancy phase" yet? I know she thinks it's funny, but it's really starting to piss me off!!
I'm allowed to do dumb shit all on my own and have it not be because I'm making a baby!
pomelo / 5093 posts
@buttermilk: Awesome. I'm hoping my midwife won't hassle me about it today. I just don't feel like myself when I can't ride, so I'm hoping it'll keep feeling good.

@autumnlove: I think this person would be moved to my "avoid at all costs permanently" list. wtf. I don't care who you are.

@Rockies11: I am pretty sure I slept better with a newborn than I do in the 3rd trimester....
pear / 1787 posts
@Rockies11: YES thank you, this is driving me nuts. people are constantly saying sleep now while you can and they scoff at me when i say i think i'll sleep better with a newborn. so annoying.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
this round I haven't gotten any bad advice, just annoying sayings like "oh boy when you have two you will never have time to yourself" or "you will never sleep!" ummmm shut up.

@blackbird: I was going to post this same thing! A coworker was horrified to see me put my work bag in an overhead cabinet.
This same coworker told me I should not eat microwaved food when pregnant!

I was complaining at work that the baby was sitting super low and someone overheard and said DH and I should have sex so it pushes her up further in my belly. And this was apparently not a joke!

I had a guy tell me, use extra deodorant I guess his wife smelled and he didn't have the heart to tell her....but warned me.....lol

@simplyfelicity: I have heard that scratching can tear the skin fibres and make any stretch marks worse
pomelo / 5524 posts
@autumnlove: Holy mean, Batman!
If it helps any, my mom was constantly telling me to watch what I ate and telling me how fat I was getting. Then after I was diagnosed with GD and watched what I ate very carefully, LO was born at 6lbs, 13oz, and she told me I starved myself b/c he was so small. Can't win.

@MoreCoffee: bizarre....although i did have someone comment that soda was bad for me. sorry but sprite and ginger ale is where it's at in the first tri!
@FaithFertility: There's truth to that man. Your body odor changes and I just felt so stinky in my last trimester. Ugh. Hated it.
cantaloupe / 6634 posts
@Kemma: Stretch marks develop in the middle layer of skin (the dermis) below the epidermis but I am sure scratching doesn't help at all.
pomegranate / 3272 posts
My mom would always tell me to rough up my nipples with my towel after I got out of the shower to get ready for breastfeeding. She actually came with me to the breastfeeding class I took b/c DH couldn't make it and they said definitely don't do that.

@MUI831: Along those same lines, I heard someone mention sandpaper! O.O

@loki: what? Haha really?
@autumnlove: wow, what a charmer. Sorry you have to deal with that!
I get a lot of "don't go out when it snows, you could slip, and why don't you just work from home for a few months?" Come on, mom, make up your mind if you want me to be a housewife or keep my job! And I've known how to walk for long enough that I don't need to be bubble wrapped!

@buttermilk: The sad thing is that this is what she was told so she did it when she had the 4 of us. Ouch!
pear / 1787 posts
@Espion: omg horrible! no thanks!
@Mama Bird: ya. apparently my baby can see what i'm doing (???) and is slouching in utero. she's destined for a lifetime of bad posture because of me! the same woman told me i need to think long and hard about what i name her and should choose something unique like Destiny or Harmony. Nothing against those names but nooooot entirely my taste.
persimmon / 1363 posts
@MUI831: my MIL bought me nipple roughing up exfoliating gloves (in pink AND blue), which she presented to me at Christmas in front of the entire extended family and went into a 5 minute long tirade about how to rough them up, and her roughing up process and so forth. It was mortifying. And I knew it was not a real thing right from the outset.
@Mrs. Lion: and @loki: I slept WAY better with a newborn than in the third tri.
Another one that made me crazy when I was a FTM was how everyone was always like "wow huge changes" and "your life will never be the same" and "get ready for a huge change". I just think you have no concept of what those changes will be, and everyone makes it sound like those changes will be all terrible and it just is unduly alarming without providing any useful information.
pear / 1787 posts
@Rockies11: hahahaha omg that IS mortifying. and ya i'm with you on that, everyone is acting like it's all doom and gloom. and there's a bit of a condescending tone like they know better than you and you're just such a naive, unprepared little lamb. drives me nuts.

A student in the college I work in told me I should put a cactus beside my computer to absorb radiation so it doesn't affect the baby! Apparently this is common practice in some places.

My mom keeps telling me (this preg and last) to watch "nice" things on TV (i.e. to avoid the news and crime shows) and to only listen to "nice music"
hahahahahaha
My grandmother won't let me drink cold drinks/watermelon in case the "baby gets cold."

When I was at a baby shower (I was about 37 weeks pregnant myself), one of the other guests RIPPED A CALIFORNIA ROLL OUT OF MY HAND, just as I was about to put it in my mouth, and said 'You're pregnant, you can't eat that."
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: taking food from a pregnant woman should be a crime, really.
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
@blackbird: Yup, that's what I was going to say. Umm I'm 5'0" tall, how in the world do I NOT lift my arms over my head?! I had one coworker who was serious about this and warned me about it every.single.day.
