Typically we don't do much for MIL, his family isn't into holidays or celebrations. And they don't do gifts, although we do give his parents a red envelope with cash (Chinese tradition) for some holidays. Sometimes we'll do a family dinner.
On the other hand, my family celebrates most holidays with at least a brunch or dinner and a card, sometimes gifts. I still don't know what to get my mom for Mother's day. She doesn't need/want anything, but I do want to thank her... I wouldn't have survived LO's first 6 months without her help!

I usually give her a card and flowers if we happen to see her near Mother's Day but otherwise I just send her a text. We aren't close.

My husband takes care of his mom, I take care of mine.
