I just got back from the dentist, and he said I should be using non-alcohol mouthwash. Well, I didn't even think about it and I've been using my regular Listerine Total Defense for this whole 27 weeks. Is that bad? I hope I didn't hurt the baby....

I cannot imagine that any tiny bit of alcohol that you might happen to ingest from your mouthwash would be enough to have an impact. I wouldn't worry.

RDH here, and no it's not bad per se. Listerine has a high alcohol content as an inactive ingredient (about 27%) Over time, it can dry out and aggrevate your gums. There has also been studies (while still early on in the research phase) that there can be a potential link between Listerine and oral cancer as well.
He probalby didn't mean that it could harm your baby, but more of your oral health.

@crash806: Thanks for the info! Do you have any recommendations for a safe mouthwash? Also, is mouthwash totally necessary after every brushing? I hardly ever use it (but I do floss though).

@banana: No probelm, glad I can help in someway! Crest Pro-Health is a good non-alcoholic mouthwash. As long as you have a good brushing/ flossing routine, you should be good, I always recommend using a mouthwash at least once a day (it can't hurt, just helps!) Flossing nightly is way more important than a mouthwash!

Also most kids' mouthwash is alcohol free (had to send my hubby bubblegum mouthwash when he was deployed in the middle east because all the mint mouthwash had alcohol and would have been confiscated!)

@crash806: thanks! I think I'm gonna go pick up some Crest Pro-Health because my husband is always bugging me about not using mouthwash. But I always hated that "alcoholy" feeling. So I'm glad they have a good non-alcoholic mouthwash out in the market. Thanks for the reco!!

I didn't know this about pregnancy and mouthwash. I always kind of enjoy the feeling of Listerine. I'm making sure to do my fluoride lately. I'll use my husband's mouthwash from now on.

I used Listerine while I was pregnant and had a healthy baby! You should be fine. It's not like you're drinking the stuff.

@Mrsbells: I wonder if that's why my mouth has been so dry? I never thought of my mouthwash! I used it before pregnancy with no issues, but here lately if I don't have something to sip on constantly my mouth is DRY! Hmmm.... think I'll give the Crest Prohealth a try.
