My Husband's Job Sucks... SO ANGRY

@rachiecakes: Ha, I think I know where you live then! I'd love to move, but it just seems reckless and maybe a tad irresponsible since we only have one year left of this. I don't know. Sigh. Too. Much. Stress.

Oh no! I'm so sorry. I hope he can find a different job soon. I too was also going to suggest contacting OSHA.

@Arden: Memphis I need someone who can explain new HIV/AIDS diagnoses to newly diagnosed pregnant women.

Bummers. I know how hard it can be! Dh was laid off when we were pregnant and it was tough timing!

@grizz: That isn't so far! I lived over by Crossville/Cookeville/Knoxville for a few years.

That actually sounds like a job I could be good at.

@Arden: this totally reminded me of something... have you looked into becoming an available translator for hospitals in your area? My mom was looking into this with Korean... they randomly need translators every now and then so you'd kinda be on call.

@Arden: Oooh perfect fit for a health educator/doula!

@Arden: It's highly unlikely they'd shut it down. It would have to be so insanely dangerous right.this.minute. for them to make that call. What would likely happen would be a list of fines to pay (which are usually huge) , changes to make by a deadline, and repeat visits by the inspector to be sure things are as they should be.

And no business owner wants to deal with them and it's always a giant pain in the ass (and a lot of money), so it's always a safe bet to get things fixed.

But if you call, be sure your husband tells absolutely no one. While it's not legal for them to fire him, they can find a way to make work even more miserable. And some other employees may even get pissed about it. I'd insist to stay anonymous if you call because some inspectors are dumb and will accidentally release who made the call. Just do it. I hate when people treat employees like crap.

@grizz: Haha, I just texted DH:
"Hey, wanna move to TN and be a SAHD?"

He texted back: "Um, yeah. When do we move?!?!"

    Lol

@mrs. wagon: I did! We went by the hospitals when we first moved here and they were like "Um, we only need translators for Spanish. We've never heard of Albanian." Central Florida isn't especially multi-cultural. :s

@Arden: I don't have much to add, other than that a year is a really long time to be miserable and stressed. I don't think it's reckless for you to put you and your family's physical and emotional well-being as a top priority, even if for the short-ish term. Looking for new options is doing just that, not being reckless. Look into moving. Look into new jobs. Look into hospitals. Report OSHA. All of these things are not reckless-they're making sure you're taken care of and SAFE.

    Just a thought

Those work conditions sounds atrocious and I am appalled that companies are allowed to treat their employees like that - and also that this company thinks it's a good idea to do so. I really hope you find a solution soon (new job for him or you) so he can leave this terrible employer.

    I'm sorry.

I'd even be a little wear of calling...what if word gets back and you dh pays for it? but what else can you do...I hope one of you is able to find something better. I don't know what kind of housing situation you're in but look into a transfer.

@googly-eyes: I think you can file a complaint with OSHA anonymously, thought I'm not 100% sure on that.

Seriously, these sound like illegal practices and I'm surprised the company is getting away with it. I hope this isn't an offensive question, but do you (or your DH) know if the company is employing illegal immigrants? I've written stories about companies in violation and fined by OSHA and many times the case is that these workers won't complain about the practices because they don't want their status to be discovered and they just need the job, so the company knows they can get away with whatever...

This is a bit of a sidetrack, but I worked at as a waitress at a restaurant once that just treated me (and the rest of their employees) like crap. No one got any breaks, we all worked 13 hour shifts, and we made well under minimum wage. I reported them to the commission normes du travail (I was in Quebec at the time) and I found that many complaints had already been filed (unsurprisingly). This guy wasn't just screwing over his employees, he was also not declaring income and his workers and avoiding taxes too! Amazingly though nothing ever happened and that restaurant is open to this day. That was around when I lost faith in the government to actually help people.

    Is there a union???

I'm so sorry; that sucks. A bad job/employer can be so draining.

    @jedeve: No union. I wish.

@IRunForFun: We have our suspicions. There are a lot of Haitian and Mexican employees that don't speak English, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are illegals. He hasn't asked or anything.

Forgive me if this has already been covered; but if you are certified to teach ESL, can you look into online schools/companies that teach ESL around the world, virtually? A friend of mine does this, and has some good flexibility with her schedule since her clients are in China and Eastern Europe. Or local schools? You wouldn’t face the same demand (or, lack of demand!) for just Albanian, if you’re a certified ESL teacher. What about the over-the-phone translation service providers? (Like for hospitals and such)?

Do you have friends or family that would be willing to provide some free or discounted daycare for your LO? Even if you just took temp jobs or per diem work, that would provide some additional income. The specifics of your husband’s job SUCK and it sounds like the employer should be reported; but if your husband is killing himself to work more than 60 hours a week at any job and you can’t make ends come close to meeting, you definitely need some other changes to take place, outside of how good/bad his employer is. 6-12 more months on furlough (with no guarantee that there won’t be further furloughs, budget cuts, whatever) is a long, long time to live in such stressful conditions. I don’t mean this to sound mean, just realistic. Sometimes we have to take crappy jobs we don’t like to get by. Good luck; it sounds so stressful for both of you, which is no good!

@Arden: You would seriously be so amazing with your doula background! Most of my clients end up giving birth alone bc they haven't disclosed their diagnosis to anyone and are scared of being outed

@IRunForFun: yeah I know I'm being paranoid. Where I used to work they went against their legal guidelines but for good reason...and someone called in (not OSHA though) and ended up getting fired. Shady stuff...that's partly why I quit the job, but I'm totally paranoid!
